New York City is the largest city in the United States, and as such, is filled with many incredible cultural opportunities. Most of the major museums have “pay what you wish” admissions, i.e. suggested donation. Below are a few suggestions of where to go – for free!
- Museum of the City of New York – Located in Upper Manhattan on 103rd street and 5th Avenue, the museum was founded in 1923. Its massive collection holds 750,000 historical objects, and rotating exhibits help to showcase different aspects of New York City History.
2) El Museo del Barrio – Also quite a hike from CityTech, but definitely worth the trip. Founded 50 years ago, as a way to counter the lack of representation of Latino artists in the mainstream art world, El Museo showcases “art and culture of Puerto Ricans and all Latin Americans in the United States.” There are numerous ongoing events, like the recurring Uptown Bounce dance parties, and year-round children’s programming.
3) National Museum of the American Indian – Located in Battery Park City, this museum is part of the Smithsonian. There’s a list of rotating exhibitions, with a unique focus on Native American history and cultural heritage.
4) Finally, and taking us back to Brooklyn, we highly recommend taking a visit to Green-Wood Cemetery.
True, it’s technically a functional and working cemetery – but this national historic landmark holds 478 acres of lush, robust foliage, and ornate, Victorian architecture. It also includes the highest geographic point in Brooklyn, and access to a much-needed cool breeze!
The above is only a small sampling of the many local institutions that have free or discounted admission, year-round. Enjoy!
