Library Technology News – Fall 2009
The library continues to make strides in upgrading its computer technology and equipment. Here are some highlights:

  • 4th Floor – 18 New Computers Installed
    o 18 new Dell OptiPlex 760 computers with wide screen monitors have been installed in the public area to replace the old models.
    o The upgrade will improve the response time of the library online catalog and databases.
  • Internet Lab – New Printer Installed
    o A new HP network printer has been installed to replace the Dell printer.
    o This high-performance workgroup laser printer with ultra-fast print speeds will improve the printing service in the Internet lab.
  • Electronic Classroom – Classroom ResponseCard Systems Implemented
    o 30 clickers have been purchased and piloted in several library classes.
    o The web version of clickers is also available in the Electronic Classroom.
  • Group Study Room – Workstations Reconfigured
    o 5 workstations with the following configurations have been installed in the group study rooms on the 5th floor:
          Microsoft Office suite is now available.
          USB fash drives can be used on these workstations.
  • New Library Web Server Installed
    o A new Dell PowerEdge server has been installed and is now in service.
    o The new server is equipped with state of the art web technologies and will greatly enhance the library web site and related services.
  • 5th Floor – Electrical Outlets Available on Student Study Carrels
    o 12 library student study carrels have been equipped with electrical outlets for the convenience of library laptop users.
  • Library LCD TV Display System Purchased
    o The display system, to be installed on the 4th floor, will be used to promote the library events and increase awareness of the library collections and services.

Dear City Tech Library Wireless Network Users:
To access City Tech wireless network, you are required to have the most updated anti-virus software installed on your computer. If your anti-virus software is dated, please update it before you access the wireless network.
If you do not have any anti-virus program installed on your computer, you can download Symantec Anti-Virus software for free from the CUNY Portal (https://portal.cuny.edu/portal/site/cuny/index.jsp?epi-content=LOGIN, and then go to “CUNY Mall” –> “Software) Center”).

CINAHL: A Resource for Health Professionals

Come take a closer look at a familiar tool! At Thursday’s workshop, we’ll explore strategies for finding journal articles in CINAHL, an essential database for nursing and the health professions.  Topics covered include basic to advanced searching using keywords and CINAHL Headings and applying limiters for more precise results.  We’ll also discuss how CINAHL search strategies can be used in the EBSCO interface of MEDLINE.  All faculty are invited to attend.

Welcome, Prof. Maura Smale!

Maura SmaleThe library department welcomes Assistant Professor Maura Smale. Maura comes to City Tech with an MA and PhD in anthropology from NYU, an MLIS from Pratt, and a BA from The University of Chicago. Her previous library experience includes work as an adjunct at Brooklyn College, where she was a reference and instruction librarian.
Besides teaching experience (anthropology, NYU), Maura was Project Manager/Online Editor for American Express Publishing (Food and Wine, Travel and Leisure, etc.) and Production Supervisor for Disney Online. Before that she engaged in archaeological fieldwork. She has a number of publications in print or in press–in archaeology and library resource management.
At City Tech, as Information Literacy Librarian and Coordinator of Library Instruction, Maura will lead library efforts to expand and enhance the work we do in these areas.
