The September Project

The September Project

The library’s latest exhibit is entitled The September Project. The September Project is a grassroots effort to encourage events about freedom and democracy in all libraries in all countries during September. The three events highlighted are: Remembering September 11; Constitution Day (September 17); and Banned Books Week (September 28-October 4, 2008).

This is the first year for the Ursula C. Schwerin Library to participate in the September Project. The library mounted an exhibit using the “Keep It Strong” posters available through The Illinois First Amendment Center .
The posters are eye-catching and promote knowledge and appreciation of the First Amendment. Tying in 9/11, Constitution Day and Banned Books Week, the exhibit features the 10 most banned books of 2007, a definition of intellectual freedom and quotations on democracy, human rights, intellectual freedom and censorship, among other topics. In conjunction with the exhibit, the City Tech community is invited to two showings of Francois Truffaut’s 1966 film, Fahrenheit 451, based on Ray Bradbury’s novel. Wednesday, Sept 24 (atrium, old bookstore) and Thursday, Set 25 (library projection room, A 431). Both at 12:30 p.m. These showings are part of the library’s ongoing Cinem@Tech program.
The New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG) has also set up a voter registration table in front of the library. Faculty has been encouraged to have their students view the exhibit, since it is a great springboard for discussion and writing assignments on democracy, freedom and civic engagement. Fahrenheit 451 Screening

It’s Banned Books Week.  The City Tech community is invited to two showings of Francois Truffaut’s 1966 film, Fahrenheit 451, based on Ray Bradbury’s novel.
Wednesday, Sept 24 (atrium, old bookstore) and Thursday, Set 25 (library projection room, A 431).   Both at 12:30 p.m.  These showings are part of the library’s ongoing Cinem@Tech program.

The 5th Floor is now accessible. Please note that the 4th floor will be for group study and individual quiet study. The 5th floor will be for individual study only plus the study rooms.

Library Relaunches Website!

The Ursula C. Schwerin Library is pleased to announce the launch of its newly redesigned website – http://library.citytech.cuny.edu. The website incorporates user-centered design, faster load times, and improved accessibility. The site has several new features including:
– A redesigned homepage with “switch” tabs to facilitate easier searching for books, articles, databases, and the site itself.
– An updated navigation scheme allows users to easily traverse the website.  Users also have section markers to indicate where they are on the site. In addition, each page has uniform navigation so users can readily visit other sections of the site.
– Electronic forms have been updated so faculty members can reserve course materials, make interlibrary loan requests, schedule reservations for the Multimedia Resource Center project ion room, and to request help through our Email-A-Librarian form.
– A new “How Do I…?” section provides quick answers to popular questions.  This includes questions on where to find books on the shelf, the length of loan periods, online renewals,  CLICS (CUNY Libraries Inter-Campus Service),  library accounts, connecting to the library’s wireless network, and much more.
– The website has also been integrated with the library’s news blog, LibraryBuzz. New headlines are automatically generated on the homepage.

Use the CUNY portal for Blackboard and eSims Access

From July 15, 2008, all Blackboard users will no longer be able to access Blackboard through the backdoor, which uses Last Name, SSN, and Date of Birth. Users must logon directly to the CUNY portal to access Blackboard. Also, students will now need to access eSIMS directly through the CUNY portal, NOT through http://esims.cuny.edu.

Library Renovation Alert! Summer 2008

The library’s 5th floor will be closed for renovations from Monday, June 30 through Friday, August 22.  The impact on library services will be as follows:
Books located on the 5th (upper) floor of the library (Circulating Stacks – call numbers A through P) will be inaccessible.  If you need a book from the 5th floor, please ask a reference librarian to help you locate a copy at another CUNY library.
Group study rooms, the electronic classroom and the college archives will be unavailable for use.
The library administrative offices will be relocated to the 4th floor and can be reached at x5497.
Due to the temporary relocation of library personnel, the Multimedia Projection Room will not be available for group screenings. Please note, however, that the Multimedia Resource Center will be open for faculty borrowing and on-site use of materials.

Library Exhibit Marks 125th Anniversary of Brooklyn Bridge

The Ursula C. Schwerin Library at New York City College of Technology, 300 Jay Street (at Tillary), Atrium 4th Floor, Downtown Brooklyn, is hosting an exhibit marking the 125th anniversary of the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge. The exhibit will run through the end August.
The exhibit features materials provided by the College’s Department of Architectural Technology, a scale model of the Brooklyn Bridge, and two large posters on the history of what was the tallest structure in the Western hemisphere at the time of its opening and the Hart Crane poem “The Bridge.” Also featured are facsimiles of photographs of the bridge from the collection of Brooklyn Borough Historian and City Tech graduate Ron
Felix Baez, Architectural Technology CLT, worked with the library to mount the exhibit, which also features a multimedia display of scores of scenes from the bridge’s long history courtesy of Alberto Rivera, Library CLT. Future Library Exhibits

The Library Exhibits Committee has approved the following exhibit proposals for the 2008/09 academic year. The current Brooklyn Bridge exhibit will remain up until the end of August 2008.
September 2008 – Banned Book Month display
October 2008 – Photographs by Prof. Carole Harris (English)
November 2008 – Photographs by Barbara Kitai (English)
December 2008/January 2009 – Toy/model trains from Professors Nicholas Manos and Robert Russo
February 2009 – African American History Month (theme to be announced) + quilts from Prof. Marta Effinger
March/April 2009 – Brooklyn in the later decades of the 20th century, from Brooklyn College’s Archives
May/August 2009 – The plays of August Wilson
In addition there will be smaller displays in the interior display cases, such as the Italian American History Month display from Prof. Phil Russo in October 2008.
