CorettaC. Assignment 2 for Sept, 9

Language to me is the form of communication humans and I think even animals partake in order to physically say our thoughts and ideas and express emotions as we pronounce the words in the form of body language or in the constructed way they are supposed to be pronounced in our native language. Language can be expressed through the mouth by just talking, body language, like sign language, or in behaviors like in animals and pets like cats, dogs, and birds which I think show their emotion through body language which can give clues to the human on how they feel. How I think language is different from communication is the meaning because when I think about language, I just only think about people expressing themselves through words coming out of there mouths, and with communications, I start to think that there are different forms and ways people are able to communicate with one another without the use of actually saying the words out of your mouth. Like text messaging and emailing I think is an example of communication because you are speaking with a person, but not through your voice in which you talking and the other person hears you, but in a way, as you type on your electric device and just send the words you want to say, with no physical interaction needed.

The role language plays in design is that design is something a person can do by putting language into one piece of art. For example, The Starry Night is a very exquisite and beautiful painting, by just looking at it critiques, and even myself, have commented on how this painting made them feel and what are their thoughts on the painting. People can just express any word that comes to their mind about the painting, and no words in the illustration were included, the picture is enough to share its creativity and is pleasing to the eye. How I think symbols are related to language is that symbols can relate to society. Symbols can represent an object, a small image, or the time period people are living in. Signs like stop and go signs symbolized for safety for cars to drive and for when to cross the street, logos like Starbucks and Shop Rite symbolize what they are selling to the public, drinks &  food, and even small objects like a ring can symbolize a persons love for their partner. Signs, signifiers, and the signified employed are in general communication because I think they help to name objects and other things in different ways and have the same descriptor and meaning. Like let’s say you see a rat or a gerbil, you can also call them rodents as they are in the same family, and\then this can make you start to visualize those rodents and other kinds of it in your mind, creating the signified concept of the rat/gerbil.

Details from the text that I think provoke ideas for developing new design strategies are that I kind of get the feeling that new design ideas can come from being inspired by different cultures. Discovering how art and design are shown in different parts of the world design and seeing the way they do design, can be a boost of motivation and representation of those who see they can recreate that style in their way and are able to change the perspective view on the way they were taught to design. The Archaic numbering system is in many different forms as the world consists of people of different origins and ways of how their language is spoken. The numbering system I think can show and tell about the origins it was discovered from, like the numbers in Japan are combined and or written in two ways, Arabic and Chinese. I find that amazing how nations that are far from each other and have developed their way of life in different ways, that their teachings and discoveries are spread to different parts of the world and people see this and can study and learn to their benefit.

Mark Gutiérrez Assignment 2 for September 9

Language is a verbal form of communication. Language is more about sound or what we call speech. There are accents even in writing. The concept of accent is present when someone speaks in their secondary language or attempt to. One of the popular accents is the French; an accent often used in movies. Another popular accent would be a sailor’s. For human, language is different from other forms of communication because it uses the tongue movement. While sounds can be made in many ways, for speech between humans to happen the main thing is to be able to produce sound and have the right tongue imitation, hence the term mother tongue. There are different degree’s of stablished communication depends on how experienced the person is in that language. The less experience means that there are misunderstandings and commonly hard to understand what someone is trying to communicate. I tried to learn to count to 10 in German and I had a hard time pronouncing the number 3 (drei). It’s almost pronounced like “dry” in English, but it needs an extra effort from your throat, almost like expelling air while saying dry. I was listening to a German speaker while repeating it out loud. I noticed that the best way to learn a new language is to repeat it out loud and of course to first listen to a native speaker. When you do it out loud you can hear yourself and see why it didn’t sound the same. After many attempts I was able to get it. I can count to 10 in german.

Language in design is used to communicate what the business is about. Also, depending on the language it can be assumed that that’s the main target audience, although not the only target audience. Signs can be used universally to represent something. One of the most common signs are the male and female silhouettes, used for the bathroom indication of set gender. Signs can be used in graphic communication to let the user know what they are seeing. On a website the cursor(arrow) changes according to what it’s interacting with. If you want to click a button the cursor will turn into a hand with a finger pointing towards the button. People often associate icons or signs to a certain thing/s, like do or don’t, such as when to cross the street and when to wait. On a website we all know if a website says “loading…” or maybe even “…” it means don’t do anything, if you want to access that content. With all of this in mind you can potentially make bring in more customer into purchasing one of your products. A great example is how youtube has a thumbnail and the graphic can really make someone click on a video. Using this same formula you can intrigue someone with a catchy word or phrase or image. On a website it’s important to make your call of action stand out. You can use many things to get this right, maybe try a button design; as people know a button is something to interact with compared to like an underline text. Essentially, make it stand out with some sort of graphic, as a button is just a rectangle silhouette.

Finally, I think that both numbering and graphic systems show that it’s very effective to create representations of set object you want to communicate. It’s so easy to attach meaning to something like the male and female silhouette to represent the male and female restroom. The best part is you may not even need to speak the language to understand its meaning. This may be good or bad depending on what it is. I think for the most part these signs are used for, the purpose; explaining what this facility or object does in a quick way and universally mostly.

According to the authors, design is something that constantly changes throughout time and how everyone defines it in different ways. “Techniques change and new materials are discovered, and with every innovation the problem arises again and the form of the object may change”. A lot of artists spend time thinking how they can solve a problem or how can they can design something but  rarely do they ask why. It also speaks about how art can be visible yet invisible because there seems to be a separation between the people and art. Art Is everywhere yet not to many people stop to think the purpose of the design or who may have created or thought of such style. With so many things changing its important to be clear on the message you want to show to the consumer or client. Designers should have an open mind and be able to rise up to the challenges of our society like in the twentieth century.

What distinguishes all fields of art and design from each other is based on how they view the situation and how they choose to communicate it. As time goes by technology advances more and some people might choose different types of methods to design. Its important for artists and designers to be concerned about the social changes in the world so they can be more open minded and look for ways in which they can contribute through their art. When you look back at work done in the twentieth century, you can see the issues that were going on at that time and how every artist chose to convey that.

Technology has become very important for artists and designers because they can easily spread their work all around the world and be able to get inspired from others as well. Not only that but it helps artists and designers communicate with each other a lot more quicker. They also have easier access to tools online. BUT with that can also come “criticism”. For example artists will have to be a lot more careful with the message they are putting out  because now that almost everyone can view it, not everyone will agree. It can become a way for others to get a sense on how you think and view the worlds problems. A designer can be responsible for this problem because they should find it a “duty” to go out of there way and explore new ideas, new opinions, and see what can arise from them. Being able to express yourself through art and design is very important because it can say so little yet impact a change in the world.

Assignment 2 for September 9

Our second set of readings are excerpts from two books; Ferdinand de Sausurre’s Course in General Linguistics and a collaboration between J. Abbot Miller and Ellen Lupton entitled Design Writing Research.

The Saussure reading consists of the first two chapters from Part One of the Course, which are in this PDF: Saussure_CourseGenLing_Exc

The Lupton-Miller reading includes 3 short essays – Counting Sheep, Modern Hieroglyphs and Language of Dreams – which can be found in this PDF: LuptonMiller_DesignWritingResearch_Exc

Here are some questions for these readings:
What is language? And how is it different from communication in general? What role does language play in design? How are symbols or iconography related to language?  How are signs, signifiers, and the signified employed in general communication? Or in graphic communication?  What facts or details from these texts provoke ideas for developing new design strategies? What can archaic numbering systems or rudimentary signage show us about language or the design process?

Shylin Ferrera Assignment 1b

Design today has become a vast market, reliant in fast productions as well as a constant gamble for distinguishability. People are looking to be easily recognizable amongst a competitive market. A market, facilitated by rapidly emerging businesses thanks to the digital era we currently live in. Design professionals are the most aware of this market, constantly looking for methods to make them more unique, more distinctive, more individualized in the pursuit of their practice. Yet what are the designers’ practices?

Be it creation, convention, messaging, or promoting, each factor amounts to the sum of its parts. In a general sense, designers create and convey a message with intention. Be it for a client or themselves, a designer identifies a reason to produces work with their specific intent. It is the process of this that separates a designer from opposing fields. It is its extensive, hard-to-pin-down generalization that makes design so specific (the irony!).

It is with designs broad-ranging comprehensiveness that designers are given the monumental task of holding accountability for all that they do. The design process is akin to a podium set in front of a universal stage. To speak, to stare, to stay in silence is all considered a message. Designers today must carefully orchestrate a way to communicate their idea or clients’ ideas. However, this is where problems can arise. Designers face the uphill battle of being too cautious or not cautious enough. Despite this battle, creators take it upon themselves to constantly undergo this task, making them an integral part of today’s society. They answer the questions others would turn away from, in a way most unique to them. It is the power of said individuality that connects them to a broad audience, thereby spreading their ideas/ intentions.

Angel Diaz 1B assignment

Armstrong believes that Design in the world today is something that is always changing, constantly being updated in some new form of way or fashion. Making designers having to constantly study and learn more as time passes by. To understand and make a new design that comes to light, into something better and more new. Munari believes that in todays world, art is something that should be available to the masses and not just those who have a high status in life. “as long as art stands aside from the problems of life it will only interest very few people”. If people don’t have access to art and design then very few will gain any interest to become the next artist or designer for the future. Art and design play a huge part in todays world. No matter what it is and where, someone put thought and heart into what it looks like. It also helps open of doors to new and old businesses, and allowing them to continue and open up opportunities for others

What helps distinguish all fields of art and design from each other is how each one thinks to solve a problem. Each one thinks differently about similar problems and can create different stories with the work they make. Along with conveying a message through different types of media, different types of ideas and how to make them and how they work on creating different concepts. No matter what field of design or art anyone is in they should always concern themselves with theoretical questions so that they can open their perspective on a situation. Maybe give them more answers, more ideas and other things that normally they might have said no to but now would consider it or maybe save it for future projects. Similar to how designers must write down and draw anything that comes to their heads. No matter how silly or out right just not fit with what they work. It theoretically can spark more. Asking what can be possible and why along with how.

Technology has been a huge part of design now that most are started on paper but will eventually move to digitization or print. As well that technology makes it easier for designers to work from home with all the tools available to them and easier to show client progress without having to waste time and wait for the next day. Not to mention gain informations through any research they may need but with technology constantly advancing that also means that designers will always have more problems to solve and work ahead of them. Designers will always be responsible for these problems, to solve and make that solution happen for the clients. Whether it be for a phone, a TV or our computers. They are in charge of how it looks, feels and attracts a consumer.
