The OER panel discussion was a big event that NYPIRG hosted. OER stand for Open Education Resources and NYPIRG wanted CityTech to get on aboard with it. The benefits of the panel would eliminate the cost of text books. I was given a task on make a video, make a poster, social media post, and flyers for the panel.
I worked with David and a NYPIRG board member, Juvanie. The communication did not go as well as I thought. The event was organized by Juvanie and she sent me a PDF of what she wanted on the flyer. David told me to speak with Juvanie and to make the poster. I did some sketches for her and let her choose which one she liked. Once I finished the poster, I showed it to Juvanie and David. Juvanie loved the poster but David did not. This is where I felt David and I started to not get along. He wanted the headline and details to say something different. I told him, “if he wanted these things on the flyer, he should have told me from start.” He thought that Juvanie told me the information of what he wanted. When Juvanie found out I changed the poster, she was disappointed that things were changed. She felt like David had stepped on her toes by changing things without her approval. They came to a common ground and decided to keep the original with a few changes that David wanted.
The thing I would have done better is communicate both with David and Juvanie and made sure they were on the same page. I felt like I had started a rift between the two and felt guilty. I tried my best to repair the rift by creating a poster they both would like.
