ANOMALY REFLECTION

When I first found out we were going to Anomaly, I was like am I supposed to know what that is? I quickly went to google and typed the word “anomaly” the first thing that popped up was the definition of it which was “something that deviates from what is standard, normal, or expected”. When researching on their sight to get an insight on what they do I found out that they basically do design problem solving. They realized that the old traditional methods weren’t being effective anymore so their strategy is to deviate from the norm which is what we try to do every day in learning design.

My aha moment was walking through the building. After visiting Dropbox I wasn’t sure what to expect when going in to see Anomaly. When I thought of Soho I thought hmm this place must be small maybe one floor. But, when we got the full tour of everything we were going down and up stairs as well as going through different buildings where every floor had different designs as well as images on the wall of funny things that happened which I found exciting. They had like a wall of pictures of employees which was funny. It seemed like a very chill and interesting office maybe an environment that I would one day want to be a part of. They have 100s of clients that they collaborate with in all different aspects from logo to social media to rebranding.

One thing that I liked was when we were discussing how they work towards the end. I liked that every department wasn’t just on their own they all do collaborations which I honestly found to be interesting and fun. From what I learned in being in school, is everyone designs but there are some people who do things better than others and think differently and have their own styles so when putting those minds together you can create something really cool and out of the ordinary. They also had many different clients that were so different from each other and they managed to win them over with their ideas. Clearly they must be doing something right if they have all these clients that they work with and are successfully expanding as a whole.

When someone in the class asked how they do their hiring to intern there I was actually pretty impressed by their answer. Apparently they do have a lot of applicants which is understandable but they also pick people up at networking events which is great. They ask multiple essay questions in order to get a feeling of the kind of personality they can bring to the group. In truth I think that’s great because so many people can design but if you cant work in a team or even communicate in collaborations and your just blahh no one wants to be around you. From the environment I experienced everyone jokes with each other and communicate with one another which is honestly important especially in design sometimes you get inspired from anything even a conversation with someone can trigger something so its always good to be around people who can communicate.

I could honestly see myself working there in the future. Ive been to some design studios where its really clean cut and quiet when people work and sometimes that makes me so stressed I need energy personally when I design. Their environment could really be inspiring and not have that same overwhelming feeling you get when you are out of ideas and need to think and you have nothing to look at or nothing to talk about.
