Times Square
In 1904, Long Acre Square changed its name to Times Square after the completion of the New York Times tower at 42nd Street and Broadway. The newspaper decided to celebrate the opening of its new building by counting down the last minutes of 1904 from the top of it. Two years later, the festivities grew to include the lowering of a ball at midnight. This event soon grew into the enormous annual party held every year in Times Square. In 1992, the private Times Square Business Improvement District, composed of area property owners and residents, was established.
