New technologies are developed to help understand complex problems. In our society, we are constantly faced with unknown variables that make our jobs harder to complete. Continuously data is being stored in databases and it has become hard to draw conclusions from it. It might take years to analyze data and predict or estimate future results. Imagine the amount of data a company collects about a customer. A company might have millions of customers and they need to understand what the customer wants and needs. We need to ensure the company can stay in business and develop a competitive advantage. Machine Learning provides a solution to many business problems. First, we need to understand what machine learning is.
What is machine learning?
The article called Detection of Diseases Using Machine Learning Image Recognition Technology in Artificial Intelligence (2022) by Jian Huang et al. says, “machine learning is a technology that combines artificial intelligence and Big Data application technology” (P. 2). This definition provides two important terms. They are artificial intelligence and big data.
Artificial intelligence means computers mimic human intelligence. Big data refers to the enormous amount of data that is created and stored in our current society. Machine learning combines these two concepts. We have a large amount of data about everything. The question becomes what can we do with it? We can take the data, feed it into a program and make predictions. The applications for machine learning are countless. Huang et al. (2022) say that machine learning can be used to detect diseases. The idea is to collect image data about a patient and feed this data to a machine-learning program. This application can help save thousands of lives. The detection of diseases can dramatically be reached in a shorter time.
