To-Do Before Class
- Bring a sketchbook and pencils to class.
- Sketchbook should be 8″x10″ or similar size.
2. Supplies and Tools for 1st class + every class:
- Be sure to get the items on this list. You will use them in this class, your design classes and throughout your studies in architecture. You cannot do this course without them!
- If you have questions about the tools, we will go over them on the 1st day of class.

- Purchase sketching and drafting supplies as listed in Course Resources
- Writing Assignment:
- Write a Reflection Essay: Follow the Assignment instructions on Slide # 9. See link above to the GoogleSlides.
- The Download above to the PDF “A Day in the Life – Architect” may also be helpful as you think about your path through architecture school, + possible career options.
- Your paper should be written using 11-point Ariel font on 8 ½” x 11” paper. Include a header in the upper left-hand corner of the paper with your name, date, course number (ARCH1101), professor’s name (Prof. Gernert), and assignment number (Assignment 1)
- Save as a PDF file with your name, date, course number [ARCH1101]
- Submit your essay via email to me, Professor Gernert
- Due: Tuesday September 6, 2022 at 8 AM
- Homework submittal file format, and uploading to Dropbox for the rest of the semester will be reviewed in Class 2
- Sketching Assignment:
- 1. Sketch 1 in your sketchbook: choose 1 or 2 objects you have at home. Set them up like the sketch we did in class – a “still life”. Sketch your ‘still life’.
- 2. Sketch 2 in your sketchbook: Draw a view in your home, or another interior space. Use the full size of your page.
- You may use pencil, colored pencils, or ink for your still-life sketch.
- Be prepared to show both of your sketches during our next class.
- Bring your sketchbook to class with your completed sketches.
