Emily was a sad lonely woman. With the hope of finding love. Her father took away any opportunity she had of ever marrying. After his death she was free and no longer under his rule. She met Homer and hope to marry but things did not turn out that way. After being denied so many opportunities to love and Mary from her father she was not willing to let this one get away. I believe Homer had no intention in marrying her either. She may have poisoned him because she knew he was going to betray her. In the story when she buys the arsenic the druggist writes “for rats” I immediately thought that he was a liar and was using her. Rats are creatures of that can enter ones home uninvitedly to survive, they’re opportunistic like Homer was being when he was with Emily. She needed to rid of him like an infestation of rats so she poisoned him like the rat that he was. He wasted her time like her father did all those years he did not allow anyone to marry her.
