Most of Dr.Jekyl and Hyde has a feel of a mystery with a build up to who these two characters truly are. Being that many are familiar with theae popular gothic character we wait for the moment where the truth is revealed about Jekylls two identities. The descriptions of these two characters are polar opposites, which adds to the psychological depth to jekylls inner demon. Hyde is described as being disfigured to a point that it is hard to describe what makes him so chilling. When Jekyll becomes hyde he physically changes his appearance and stature because in truth they are separate beings. Jekyll clearly is trying to fight this demon inside of him but ultimately loses the battle to fight it. Hyde is a killer and gives the people around him an uneasy feeling. It is obvious he has no care of the perceptions of others. While Jekyll is consertive and similar to the mondain society that he is surrounded with. Jekyll shows how in society one conforms to fit a certain order but when we suppress that need to express ourselves the urge takes over. Hyde is the inner demon of what conforming will do to ones mental state. This novel speaks about about how people hide there true selves because they fear what others may think or perceive them to be. Jekyll keeps fighting to keep his composure but Hyde breaks through numerous times. The end result it is too difficult to hide your inner thoughts and wants. Regardless if Hyde was pure evil he was still part of Jekyll in the end.

It’s interesting you touch on Mr. Hydes appearance as it’s always a troupe not only in gothic literature but nearly all types of literature that those humans who lack real human qualities are always made to look disfigured and undesirable in a way. To me it seems like those who read the story would have empathy for this “soulless” character unless we make said character unappealing, that way we won’t feel remorse or guilt for disliking the character. I wonder how people would feel if Mr. Hyde looked more human than he is actually perceived.
