Preliminary Research and Picking a Topic

The topic and focus that I want to discuss for op-ed piece/opinion essay is about war, particularly the one between Russia and Ukraine right now. According to my research, I learned that the tension between two countries grew worse when Russia feels threatened knowing that Ukraine is going to join the NATO. However, it seems like it was not even true because the President of Ukraine said they never even plan to join NATO at all.

I want to argue as to why it got to the point where both countries had to deploy armies and warfare vehicles and destroy and cause harm to people when there could have been hundreds of many mature and proper ways to talk about whatever their problems are. The consequences of their actions are affecting all other countries including the gas prices in America.

1) Why was it necessary to deploy armed forces and cause harm to people?

2) What other repercussions could there be other than the skyrocketing gas prices in America?

3) How can we prevent this from happening in the future?

I think the Ukrainian War is a good topic for your Op-Ed but you need a clearer focus and question for your Op-Ed so that you are make one clear point/argument about the war. For example, if you think that the actual cause of the war isn’t the Ukraine joining NATO, then what is the cause? Could you do research and make an argument about what you see as there actual cause?
