How essential are essential workers? This writing piece will focus on the most recent controversial mandates spearheaded by our very own Mayor Adams. NYC has been a strong proponent of vaccine mandates to increase vaccination rates. The rhetoric that accompanied the need for such a rule is that science dictates that more people need to be vaccinated against covid 19 to defeat this disease. So while we interact with each other, we would be less like to be adversely affected by this disease. This reasoning seemed to be the predominant thinking behind the ousting of over 1000 city employees. After all, they would be coming in contact with others. They would be the likely culprits responsible for potentially contracting and spreading the virus, causing illness, hospitalization, and possible death. It sounds like a logical argument, but how does the mayor of NYC, now responsible for the current mandate, turn around and grant an exemption for selected groups?
What should be the reaction of New Yorkers who lost their job after refusing to take the vaccine but witnessed athletes and entertainers granted exemption from the same mandate?
In what ways does this exemption contradict the CDC’s findings and recommendations?
How is this mandate equitable amongst the NYC labor force?
Yes- great topic. It seems like you will argue against the latest rule on athletes and the vaccine. Correct? And it seems like your point isn’t about the vaccine, but about the way the mandate is not being equally enforced across all groups and injustice of this. Correct?
