What are some social issues that you feel strongly about and might inspire you to act? You might think about events, laws, policies, rules, regulations, and social and political movements that have caught your attention (and that have more than one side). Avoid typical topics (like the death penalty, abortion, and violent video games). Really search for an issue — local, national, global– that you feel is important and want to know more about; the goal here is not to know your position beforehand but to use research to help you decide where you stand on an issue.
Brainstorm a list of three or four topics: for each issue write one or two questions that come to mind with regard to your issue. Consult City Tech Library’s Guide to Developing a Research Question to help you with this assignment.
A couple of issues that come to mind is the recent uptick in violence in NYC, the Ukraine and Russian war, gentrification in nyc neighborhoods, and the homeless issue in NYC.
For the uptick in violence, I believe there has been an uptick in gun violence in recent years, so how is the new mayor handling that situation? How much of an uptick is it?
For the ongoing Ukraine and Russian war, has there always been tension between them and what is the safest way to deescalate the situation?
How has gentrification in NYC effected poor family’s/neighborhoods, and is it doing more harm then good?
Are there enough shelters to support the amount of homeless people in the streets in NYC, how can we resolve this issue?
There are many social issues that are happening all around the world right now that have inspired me to act. One issue is the war between Ukraine and Russia. If things escalate, there will be a third World War. Some questions I have regarding this topic is, what started this problem between the two countries and what can be done to minimize any damage as a result? I also want to know what U.S. citizens and I can do to help. Another social issue that is happening right now is climate change. The global temperature is continuing to rise and if something is not done, there will be drastic global issues. What I want to know is, is it possible to completely prevent climate change from affecting Earth? The third social issue that has caught my eye is government corruption. Most third-world countries have corrupt politicians running their society and I want to know how the U.S. can help. I also want to know if it is possible for the citizens of these countries to overthrow the government and elect proper politicians that are for the people. The final issue that I have become very interested in is ocean conservation. The majority of our planet is covered in water and it is essential for creating oxygen. However, pollution in the ocean and overfishing have caused many problems and many species are in endangerment of extinction as a result. A question that arises for me in regards to this topic is, what would happen if all fish became extinct? These are some topics that I am interested in for Unit 2.
One of the issues I would like to look more into is gentrification in Brooklyn. How do people feel about gentrification happening in Brooklyn?
The second issue would be gun violence. How does gun violence affect us?
The third would be drug abuse. Why do people abuse drugs?
Some topics that come to mind are,
– Discrimination against pregnant women
why do people have a problem with women being pregnant?
-The social media addiction that leads to cyberbullying
why are people rude and close minded on social media and decide bring others down?
-The problem of homeless college students
what is the reason behind many college students becoming homeless?
1)Gender inequality
-Since girls are also humans, what makes a man think that they can mistreat them?
-Why do most men think that they have the upper hand over women?
2)Global warming
-It has been a problem for really long now, what will happen if it continues to last?
-Will all the ice in Antartica melt? If it does, how are animals going to be affected?
3)Bullying
-Why do people think that they can just pick a random person and just decides that he/she can bully this person?
-Should schools or workplaces create a punishment for bullies?
-Climate Change.
What is the extent of climate change and how will it affect future generations?
-Racial Discrimination.
-How do these racial discriminations affect society?
War in Ukraine.
-How will this affect the world as a whole?
The current social issue that really hits me hard and makes me emotional right now is about warfare. An example of this war is the one between Russian and Ukraine today.
It does not make sense to me as to why brutal war is necessary. Like why do we need to kill other humans in order to get what we want? Can we all just leave things as it is?
I do not understand how a country choose their leader. Why is the leader acting out of personal interest rather than the interest of the citizens? How does the government system works in other countries?
It seems like some countries do not have a sense of sympathy which is suppose to be a natural sense to human beings and is the key to peace. Do we not have the right as human beings to choose to live and refuse not to kill and die for an interest other than our own? And why would you send your citizens to kill other people and die? They have families and loved ones too. Is there any mature way to handle the tension between or among countries without having to establish brutal war?
