I would like police brutality to be my topic. But more specifically when and under what circumstances should police be allowed to use more force. This is an important topic because throughout time and these last few months/ years there have been viral videos and reports of police use excessive force and I believe that this could be due to police being undertrained, and unaware of the actual rules.
When can police use exesive force/ why?
Do police officers need to be more training/ awareness of the rules?
When are police officers actually right in their decisions?
Tyler, I think an Op-Ed making an argument for something regarding police training or an Ope-Ed about the situations in which force should be allowed would work. The second of these is harder because you will have to be careful how you frame this discussion. For example, the word “excessive” already suggests too much. Maybe you want to think about what police mean by force and what is and is not an acceptable kind of force. These are some ideas for you to consider as you narrow down and move forward with your topic.
