Based on dictionary.com the word outstripped means to outdo or outperform. In the article ” Teaching men to be emotionally honest” the author used the word outstrip on the line “It should come as no surprise that college enrollment rates for women have outstripped men’s.” to compare women to men based on the college enrollment rate. While reading this article the word outstripped stood out to me because I never knew that females have outstripped man in college enrollment.

Metrosexual
met·ro·sex·ual (noun)
Andrew Reiner, “Teaching Men to Be Emotionally Honesty;”
www.definition.com
The word I would like to add to my glossary is “Metrosexual” it means a young, urban, heterosexual male with liberal political views, an interest in fashion, and a refined sense of taste. The sentence that uses metrosexual says “despite the emergence of the metrosexual and an increase in stay-at-home dads, tough-guy stereotypes die hard.” In where I thought that it meant that are guys that try to show off and act very masculine. But what I learned from the definition that those are the type of guys that act tough but in reality that is just a act they put to show off.
“ubiquitous”
After reading “teaching men to be emotional honest” I came across a world that I didn’t remember what it meant the world was “ubiquitous”, I was very curious I wanna to find out. According to Merriam Webster it means “existing or being everywhere at the same time” which a bit confusing at first but later it clicked and now it make a lot of sense. Now with the word finally in my head I feel better knowing what it is.
denigrate (verb)
Denigrate (verb): to attack the reputation of : defame.
Source: Merriam-Webster Dictionary (online)
“But these cultural activities are often denigrated as un-masculine by preadolescent and adolescent boys.” This quote is found in Andrew Reiner’s Teaching Men To Be Emotionally Honest. Prior to the quote, sociologist have noticed that boys who participate in music, art, drama and foreign language tend to have higher grades than the boys who don’t participate in them. That is why this quote tells us that these activities “attack the reputation of” what it means to be masculine. Masculinity standards were set by young boys who were taught by their parents, particularly their fathers or other male role models.

Candidly
According to the Merriam Webster’s dictionary, the word candidly (adjective) means expressing opinions and feelings in an honest and sincere way. We can find this word in “Allowing teenage boys to love their friends”, in paragraph #9, it state, “Boys in early adolescence would speak candidly about those friendships to Dr. Way and her researchers, acknowledging the importance of having a best friend who was both repository and guard for their most private feelings”. According to this sentence it trying to tell us that boys are also allows to have friends to talk about their problems and their feelings like girls do. Also, boys are allow to have feelings for their friend and showed to them that their care so they can have that support whenever they feel down.
Amalgam
According to Merriam Websters Dictionary, the word alagam means a mixture of different elements. The word is used in the article “Teaching Men to be Emotionally Honest” to explain the combination of experiences in sexual engagement. For example,”One student interviewed her male and female friends about their hookups and acted out an amalgam of their experiences through the eyes of a male and a female character;” this means that as they explain their experiences, it shows how different they are from one another.
Merriam-Webster defines the word Taciturn as an adjective, temperamentally disinclined to talk. While reading the article “Allowing Teenage Boys to Love Their Friends” by Jan Hoffman I noticed she included a short story about a teenager who was afraid to tell his friend that they were drifting apart. The adjective came up in the authors interpretation of the event occurring in that boys life. Thats why she included the lines “indeed, the shutting down of those relationships is part of what turns boys into taciturn, emotionally disconnected men”. After reading this I got more context of what the word really meant. It means that the boy did not want to talk about his feelings because he felt he would be judged the way society judge other boys for expressing how they feel to anyone. He was holding back his feelings just because he did not want to be viewed as “weak” or “gay” as society would say.
Ubiquitous
Ubiquitous: Existing, or being present everywhere, especially at the same time. (adjective)
Today’s word is ubiquitous, I found this word while reading “Teaching Men to Be emotionally Honest” by Ana Homayoun. Before reading this article I never heard or saw this word before, it looked like a very unique word that I just had to search up what it meant. I would have never imagined that it would mean for something to exist or be present everywhere. But when reading the sentence that stated the word ubiquitous it all made sense. The author wants reader to know the most important things that males do in order to prove their masculinity, such a binge drinking, hookups, and always playing video games. I now know how to put this word to use when needed.

Taciturn
According to Merriam-Webster, taciturn is described as being temperamentally disinclined to talk. The word taciturn is described as an adjective. It is used to describe someone. On October 23rd, 2018, I came upon this word in the text entitled, “Allowing Teenage Boys to Love Their Friends” by Jan Hoffman. It states on page two, “Indeed, the shutting down of those relationships is part of what turns boys into taciturn, emotionally disconnected men, Dr. Way said. She herself has four best friends — three women and one man.” When I read the word I was unsure of the meaning in terms of the article. I was not sure what it was trying to say. The term taciturn to me meant a mechanism meaning, it was a mechanism or trait men carry which makes them emotionally disconnected. I see the meaning of the word better now because men feel as if they cannot talk to other so it causes them to behave in a manner of not speaking. They do not feel inclined to speak to one another because that is the society norms.
Denigrated
According to Merriam-Webster’s dictionary, denigrate is defined as to deny the importance or validity. In the reading “Teaching Men to Be Emotionally Honest” by Andrew Reiner, the word appears in the sixth paragraph as stated, “Boys’ underperformance in school has more to do with society’s norms about masculinity than with anatomy, hormones or brain structure. In fact, boys involved in extracurricular cultural activities such as music, art, drama and foreign languages report higher levels of school engagement and get better grades than other boys. But these cultural activities are often denigrated as un-masculine by preadolescent and adolescent boys.” Now knowing what the word means, the author put this study by sociologists Thomas A. DiPrete and Claudia Buchmann, to convey the idea that young boys struggle to show their emotions and don’t get much involved extracurricular activities. And those that do get involved in extracurricular activities, tend to do better in school.
