Research Question

Why is Islamophobia an issue in France?

Being Muslim is what drew me to the issue about islamaphobia in France. The discrimination largely attacks women and being a man I don’t understand the same struggles Muslim women face with wearing head scarves or face coverings. I also felt interested in this topic because as a part of the worldwide Islamic community I had to do my part in at least learning about the prejudice that people of my religion face. I feel moved to learn as much about the issues not just because of my religion but because of the freedom of people living in France. I feel that these excuses are just ways for their government to control more people.

I also wanted to understand how the French think that by oppressing women’s choice of wearing a face covering they are supporting women’s empowerment. How does charging a fine for wearing a piece of clothing support women’s empowerment? I also want a better explanation as to how anti Muslim policies is going to benefit the secularism of France. I know that discrimination and predjuce does no happen over night so I also want to know the history of this Islamaphobic climate. Are there people who are taking a stand against the actions of the government? These are questions I had while doing preliminary research about and hope to understand.

It sounds to me like your question is more about Muslim women in France and not about Muslims in general. And it sounds like you’re particularly interested in the laws or policies around Muslim women’s attire–like you want to bring awareness to this particular form of discrimination and show something about it. What is it you want to know about these laws and policies? Do you want to understand how these policies impact women in that society? Something else?
