Research Questions:

What are the affects of adolescents lacking knowledge in finance?

This topic came to mind during our lesson since it is a topic that affects me. During my senior year of high school I had a financial literacy class, however, my professors never actually took the time to explain things thoroughly or go into depth. Most schools don’t teach students about taxes, mortgages, financing money or investing. This is information that should be taught at a young age, so when they get to the age of 18 they are well informed, know what to expect, and won’t struggle financing their money. When researching about the topic I am expecting to find information on people that have taught themselves and have become successful and reasons why they believe schools don’t teach them. In addition, I will be finding schools that are attempting to implement financial literacy classes to their students. I expect educators to explain how they teach their students about these topics. However, I don’t believe teaching students finance would be taken seriously until school boards take action. These financial literacy classes should be taught at younger ages, not just have a few months of financial literacy courses the very last months of senior year, when some students are already 18 years and tackling adulthood. That was the experience I had with the financial literacy class I took. Some students are lucky enough to have parents that are well informed about financing, but to those who have parents just as confused it can be very tough to succeed. While looking into social media, I have encountered several videos of people stating that it is all a plan of molding students to become workers. When students do their own research online they are able to become aware and learn strategies to build an empire.

You can start with this question you have. But if you find that it is too broad, you might consider: Why is it important for adolescents to learn about finances. Or– How should parent or schools (you’ll pick one of these) teach adolescents about finances?
