  • Significant experience or moment that is a turning point telling the reader how they felt, thought, happened and what the reader can take away from the writer’s experience
  • Audience is often people who are eager to learn and explore and gain insight and information–students?
  • Clear on the specific location that the author is having their experience
  • Talks directly to the reader
  • Use “I” –except for Plato
  • Each describes a kind of struggle they overcome–this is often the author’s background/context
  • Childhood is often referenced
  • All are curious to learn something new
  • Reference to some outside person, author, information that helps you understand the personal better
  • Theme of fitting in and finding your place/yourself/your voice is common
  • Shift in the person–mindset or something else in them
