Danticat, Breath, Eyes, Memory , Chapters 13-19 By Jayme Monge

Throughout society we make diverse decisions in life. Those decisions can have a positive or negative impact on our lives. In this scene Sophie made her decision to utilize the mortar pestle on her private part. In order to prevent her mother from inspecting her she took action of using it. After all Sophie thought that sex was important in her relationship with Joseph. Nobody should interfere with her sexual desires and life. After this episode there were several alterations being made of rebellion, her life, and her relationship with her mother.Ever since Sophie’s departure from her mother’s home she undergoes a case of suffering.  Not only did Sophie disobey her mother’s regulations he appears to be in trouble. Due to her lack of knowledge in decision making not only is she suffering but she caused herself pain as well. Sophie was in massive pain and is still willing to have painful sex with Joseph soon after moving-in with him. After the pestle trauma, the painful sex with Joseph, she eventually conceived a baby. In which she later returns to Haiti with and e Aunt Atie and Grandmother Ife welcomed the baby to the family..

Breath, Eyes, Memory Ch13-19

It appears the author Danticat fast forwards in time with Sophie visiting Haiti with her daughter Brigitte. Sophie learns that Atie is no longer illiterate and has even begun writing poems. When grandma Ife asks Atie to read to her she reads the poem that Sophie had wrote to Ife on Mother’s Day. After all these years, Ife had not forgotten. This is a very touching scene. It also interesting to note that Sophie and her mother have not talked for a while and has not seen her grandchild. In these chapters the theme of mother and daughter is very apparent and emphasized. Sophie and her mother’s disconnect, the constant mentioning of how Brigitte looks similar to Martine, and also Louise’s mum’s death. Furthermore, we learn that Sophie left to get away from Joseph.

What stood out to me from chapters 13 – 19 was Tante Atie’s alcoholism. I thought it was odd how much she has changed since Sophie left to New York. Before she was a sweet motherly figure and what seemed to be wise and now she is a mess, she does not even care how she is viewed in front of Sophie. I think she became that way because Sophie was the only good thing in her life and it was taken away from her. She was like a daughter to Tante Atie and cared for her deeply but she need to stay faithful to her sister even though it was her who took care of Sophie’s childhood. Tante Atie is unable to have her own children because no one wants to be with her.

Breath, Eyes, Memory 13 – 19

Decisions we make in life can either cause us harm or good. I felt sorry for Sophie when she made her decision to use the mortar pestle on her private part to stop her mother from inspecting her. After this episode of rebellion, her life changed and likewise her relationship with her mother.

Sophie appears to have endured suffering since she left her mother’s home.  I believe Sophie is a danger to her own self despite the situation with her mother’s inspections that caused her to injure herself. Although she was suffering pain from the damage to her private part, she would still rather go through painful sex with Joseph soon after moving-in with him while she was not healed from her trauma. In addition to the pestle trauma, the painful sex with Joseph, she conceived a baby which she later turns up in Haiti with. Her mother Martine had never seen the baby but her Aunt Atie and Grandmother Ife welcomed the addition to their family.

What really stands out to me is Sophie herself she’s a very relatable character. She’s going through the motions of a normal teenager. As far as college goes I can relate to her I don’t like my college it makes me feel like I’m still in high school. As far as relationship goes Sophie’s moms response is a very typical response for a mother or a teenage girl. I feel bad that Sophie doesn’t have an adult figure that she can talk too about a relationship. Her mother doesn’t approve of it and in my opinion wouldn’t want to hear it. But then again it’s difficult for teenagers and a parent to talk about these things sometimes.i hope to see them grow an become closer and not have so many secrets. Sophie and her mother need to first work out their relationship and become comfortable with each other and the wants of each other in order for Sophie to be in a relationship her mother approves of

i once said before that the novels we have read so far is more about women suffrage in the world, but i think it more about the weakness a women has for a man, here we see sophie falling for man by the name of joseph twice her change, i think this give us a brief insight that something might be wrong with this crazy guy joseph for wanting such a young girl to be his wife, i believe joseph will end up bringing pain to sophie life, taking advantage of her, but sophist is scared to tell her mother about joseph, but to be honest i don’t believe martine will be mad at sophie because her mother said don’t pick up a guy that won’t do anything for you, you need someone that will help you and joseph being a older man, martine might see joseph as someone who can help sophie moving forward for the best
