I, Tituba chapter 10-1 of part II

I, Tituba is astonished by how much the community of Salem is obsess with the thought of satan. Everything someone did bring suspicion they were paranoid by everything and everyone.Tthey were so distrustful. Tituba got so caught up in what was going on around her that she found herself, ” Reciting incantations and performing ritual.” Tituba knew that she was a good person. However, the people in Salem especially the children thought she was evil although she encourage them to do good.

Tibuta love Betsey and took care of her as if she was her own child. So, it was very surprising when Betsey became sick the way Elizabeth looked at Tibuta with accusing eyes, how ungrateful Elizabeth was.  She had forgot that it was Tituba who took care of her when she was sick. Was Tituba responsible for the predicament she found herself in? Whey did she exposed herself to these children? Was it because she was home sick she told them the folk tale of her island?.

I was upset with the plot those deceitful children played on Tituba. Yet, the moment that really disturbed me was Samuel Parris and his accomplishers. It stired my spirit when they push that sharp instrument into Tituba’s private area. Parris prays to God however, he is a evil man and a bully who want Tituba to confess to something she is not. When he did not get his own way he make sure that she was put in jail

I, Tituba Ch. 8-12 Of Pt.2

Samuel Parris’ doesn’t want to pay to get Tituba so she is sold. Tituba is sold to a Jewish man named Benjamin Cohen d’Azevedo. He is a widower of nine children, none of his children speak English. She observes (and narrates) his obsession with the centuries of ill treatment experienced by Jews the world over, gratefully accepts gifts of his late wife’s clothing, and becomes painfully aware of his longing for his wife. She recalls the rituals of bringing the dead to speak with the living and, with the encouragement of the spirit form of Hester, brings Cohen’s wife to him and, eventually, to their oldest daughter. She also writes of how their emotional intimacy became sexual intimacy, commenting that she often longed for the sexier, more muscular John Indian, but nevertheless found sexual pleasure with Cohen. I feel like Tituba seen him as a way back home to Barbados.

I, Tituba Ch. 2-7 Of Pt.2

Even though Tituba was free she went into slavery because of love. She keep doing things for love and they keep failing her. She went into slavery for John Indian because she loved him. John soon showed disloyalty. Just like what Mama Yaya an Abena said “she was going to pay for it ; He’s no good for you.” Tituba continues to bring up what her mother says also about why women can’t live without men. Tituba meets Hester while in prison. All of the people arrested with Tituba are either being released or have died. Tituba tells Hester her story about leaving the free world for love and I realized that she is still defending John Indian. Later on she finds out that Hester has hung herself and is in disbelief. Tituba says “Hester, Hester, why didn’t you wait for me?“. I feel bad for Tituba being that she sacrificed her freedom for someone that she thought could rescue her through everything and comfort her is not here now.

I, Tituba, Black Witch Of Salem Ch. 10-1of Pt. 2

What stuck out to me while reading these chapters was in Ch.11 on pg. 77 when Tituba is being accused of witch craft and asked Betsey “Betsey, who has turned you against me?” and Betsey bite Tituba until she bled. I felt bad for Tituba because she really cared and treated/confided in Betsey. Also, throughout the book Tituba has shown to be protective of Betsey and Goodwife Parris’. Tituba is shocked that Betsey would question her intentions. Tituba eventually cried. I felt like someone said something to Betsey for her to do all of this. “You, do good? You’re a Negress, Tituba! You can only do evil. You are evil itself.” Tituba and Betsey were close and for Betsey to talk to her like that was unexpected and for her to have everyone to turn against her so suddenly.

I, Tituba, Black Witch Of Salem Ch. 5-9

During reading these chapters Tituba develops a good relationship with Goodwife Parris’ and Betsey. She doesn’t really get along with Abigail (Parris’ niece) because she constantly demands Information and details about Tituba’s stories of the invisible world and who Tituba comes to believe is a liar. Tituba takes Betsey for various activities including walks to the wharf along with Abigail. One afternoon their was a crowd in the street near the courthouse because there was going to be an execution. Their was an old woman with a rope around her neck because she was going to be hung. Tituba witnessed the hanging. It hurt her because she started screaming and I’m sure it brought her back to her witnessing her mothers death because it did for me. She was in shock because it was a moment she didn’t want to relieve again. When she was screaming she probably seen her mother not the old lady.

I, Tituba, Black Witch Of Salem Ch. 1-4

When the novel first starts Tituba describes the circumstances of her early birth & life. She talks about her mother having her at 16 because her mother being Abena was raped. When Abena arrived at Barbados from Africa her owner found out she was pregnant with Tituba. So, the owner gave Tituba’s mother to a slave named Yao. Yao took care of Tituba as if she was his own. I also found it interesting when Tituba talks about her mother (Abena) was distant towards her growing up because of the way she was conceived. Yao had to force Abena to comfort Tituba. ” Sit her on your lap. Kiss her ! Fondle her ! “. I found it hard to read that part because Tituba loved her mother regardless. Yao promised to love Tituba as his own and he gave Tituba enough love for the both of them. Relationships were important to Tituba. Later on Abena’s former owner tried to rape her and she ended up injuring him. Abena was hung and Yao killed himself by swallowing his tongue. This was hard because even though Abena found it hard to love Tituba she loved her mother and had to watch them hang her.

Krystal Corry – I, Tituba (Chapter 10-1 part 1)

Tituba’s giving personality is still shown as I continue to read the book. Tituba is the most courageous character in this novel. Something that I admire about Tituba is the way that she always stands up for herself to those who sees her her for what she is not. She stands up to those who thinks she is the opposite of her real views, morals and goals. For example on page 61, Mary Walcott say’s to Tituba, “Tituba, is it true you know everything, you see everything, and can do everything? You’re a witch then?” Tituba immediately replies with her fuel of rage, “Don’t use words whose meaning you don’t know. Do you know what a witch really is?” Tituba doesn’t think twice on representing herself. Tituba considers herself a healing person, or a “good witch”. Tituba associates being a witch with being positive, being able to heal, and protection. However, the society around Tituba associates witches with negativity, evil, and having bonds with the devil. Furthermore, Tituba is shown to be very courageous throughout the text especially compared to other characters in the novel. Such an example would be Good Wife Parris who is often being pushed around, and physically abused by her husband Samuel Parris.

Tituba has the fortune of being bought by an old wealthy Jew. Lucky for her she soon finds out he has the means to possibly get her back to Barbados. She is bought to care for his kids due to the death of his wife, she soon finds herself dull circle  back into needing the affections of a man after the horrid experience she had with John Indian, who by the way has moved on with a white woman to another city. After having the affair with her master his house burns and his kids die. He attributes this to the fact that he refuses to give tituba her freedom. He gives tituba her freedom but for a moment tituba hesitates, she weighs her freedom against, love, lust and sex once again. If it wasn’t for her master insisting in her taking her freedom she would have remained in Salem. She eventually finds her way back to Barbados where trouble is starting to greet her again.

4. I, TITUBA, THE BLACK WITCH OF SALEM

Here Tituba meets Hester.

Hester’s character is very interesting and Tituba obviously bonds with her. What makes her so different is the fact that Hester defies all of the constraints of society with her rebellious personality. She’s goes as far as saying “Its not her society”, and calls herself an outcast. Although her outcast title comes from the fact that she had a mind of her own and was very opinionated, she was an outcast none the less just like Tituba.

Of course adultery is an extreme act, especially in those days, but Hester doesn’t cower in the face of her punishment. She also seems to despise men – saying that their gender seems to give them special privileges, which was true. Her ways may seem like feminism, and even though mentioned in the book, her ‘feminsm’ then is normal rights for women today. And can you really blame Hester for her thought process? Because she seemed to be raised in a family that thought women and men should be equals – which was something very different for the times.

Everyone tituba is close too either leaves her or dies. Benjamin was a Jewish man who was wealthy. His only use to tituba was to buy her and then sell her to someone in Barbados so she would be home. In a way he was her ticket home. As time goes on tituba and Benjamin become closer and closer. This all starts when she reunites him with his dead wife. Tituba wanted to help him and really hoped that by doing this he would let her go and have her freedom . That wasn’t the case After that Benjamin didn’t wanted her by his side and they developed a relationship where they would end up sleeping together. the house Benjamin lived in was burned down and his 9 children died, so he decided it was time to leave Salem. He believed it was all because he didn’t let tituba have her freedom that’s why everything was happening. So Benjamin set off to road island and tituba was once again left alone. He bought her passage to Barbados but she didn’t want to leave him. She wanted to be with him. It was an unexpected relationship but in the end tituba always gets left alone.
