Hi all! Below is the work for next week. But first here is the information I announced in class:

Many freshmen and transfer students are missing their high school diplomas, which will result in their being dropped from classes.

Just in case, if you are a freshmen or transfer student, you should check your CUNYFirst account to see if your high school diploma is missing. If it is missing, then you can drop off a copy of your diploma at Admissions

Admissions is located in room NG 17 and on-campus hours are

  • Monday        9:30 AM – 4:30 PM
  • Tuesday        9:30 AM – 4:30 PM
  • Wednesday  9:30 AM – 6:30 PM
  • Thursday       9:30 AM – 4:30 PM
  • Admissions can be contacted at 718-260-5500 and admissions@citytech.cuny.edu

For Monday, 9/12 (asynchronous, work due on our class site by 11:59 pm)

  • Re-read the assignment guidelines for Unit 1: Education Narrative.
  • Then, do the following to continue brainstorming and developing ideas for the Unit 1 assignment.
    • Start a new Google doc and name it “First Name Last Name Unit 1 Scaffolding.” For example, my document would be titled “Ruth Garcia Unit 1 Scaffolding.”
    • In your document, spend 5 minutes on each of the following prompts:
      • Choose your favorite brainstorming strategy and write for 5 minutes writing about all of the times you can think of that changed how you approached the learning process or shifted how you felt about education
      • Choose your favorite brainstorming strategy and write for 5 minutes writing about your chosen major or career goals and all the valuable moments that shaped your interest in your chosen field
      • Choose your favorite brainstorming strategy and write for 5 minutes writing about all of the moments when you “woke up” in some way and changed a central belief, value, or idea that your felt certain about for a long time
      • Choose your favorite brainstorming strategy and write for 5 minutes about the experiences you mentioned in your double entry journal for Douglass and/or Malcolm X. Include as many details as possible.
  • Read and Annotate â€śShitty First Drafts.”
  • After reading â€śShitty First Drafts,” think about how you approach writing assignments.
  • Write a Post that includes the following:
    • A paragraph describing your approach to drafting; for example, do you write several drafts? wait until the last minute? proofread carefully? Give honest details! Then, add what you would like to change or improve about your writing process.
    • At the end of your paragraph on “Shitty First Drafts,” add a link to the Google Doc with the brainstorming you did above. Make sure you have changed the share setting so that anyone with the link can edit.
  • Before publishing your post, make sure you do the following:
    • Title it “Unit 1 Brainstorming”
    • Pick the category “Unit 1 Work”
    • Then, publish the post you just wrote

For Wednesday, 9/14 (in-person session at City Tech)

Note- you can read the Plato text quickly as we will read it out loud in class.

I never really thought about until now. I would say my approach to drafting is just writing everything that comes to mind down on paper and then refining it as I go and proofreading everything I’ve written as I write it. When I start writing my hands and mind both go off writing everything that comes to mind, I think that’s a good way to getting a good way to writing. Looking at it from afar also helps with the writing process for me, take a moment to step back and analyze how you want your story to flow, the tone you want to set for your piece and making sure the audience understands how you want to come off.

For my approach to drafting, honestly, I’ve never really been the type to rewrite a draft more than once to get my final copy. I normally start by freewriting and it typically just comes to mind. For my final submission, it’s normally my first draft, refined with additional details, and fixed grammatically. I tend to wait until last minute, as I’m doing writing this down now, and hoping the draft of this paragraph I’m writing now is suitable enough for a grade. The most important part of my process is to reread my writing, sound it out and make sure there’s a flow and definition to my sentences.
