Draft -Artist Statement-

Around this time last year, April 2021, my family had been affected by COVID19, my parents and my three sisters had tested positive for the virus the same week. I was out of the country and was not exposed to the virus when they were together. So, this worldwide pandemic is something that up brings most of my curiosities involving families and politics, and much more. It has been extremely stressful for families with significant worries about the health of family members, financial instability, social isolation, and increased caregiving burdens associated with having children at home. The purpose of me making this video for an older audience was to reassure parents and families that they’re not alone in how they’re feeling regarding the education of their children, and how important it is to take care of each other during this pandemic not only physically but emotionally and mentally. Also, students in college could gain a lot from this video and understand what their parents are going through. Young adults may also struggle to adapt to new social routines, from choosing to skip in-person gatherings, to consistently wearing masks in public. It is also important to support young adults in taking personal responsibility to protect themselves and their loved ones.

The appeals that I have decided to use would include the three categories of persuasive advertising techniques. Which would be ethos, pathos, and logos. Ethos appeals to the speaker’s status or authority, making the audience more likely to trust them. In this video, my goal is for the audience to trust the information that is being portrayed because all the information is from statistics of families and from research articles.  Pathos appeals to the emotions, I tried to really grab the attention of the audience by putting the example of my family, so they could see how families struggle mentally and physically and on top of that, they have to take care of each other while the children are students as well, making it a responsibility of the parents to teach them or the responsibility of the eldest sibling responsible of their education.

The genre I chose for my unit three would be from contemporary journalism,  which is an interview.

Unit 3 Plan

My goals for this project would definitely be the flow of the video and the amount of information being provided, having a mentor text helped a lot. It gave an example of where I wanted to post the video and how informative my video would be.  I have been thinking of the message I would like to show my audience, I want the interview to be very emotional. To be more exact in the form of having my audience relate to the interview and also gaining new information that they did not know of that specific topic. I would want to gather more interview examples regarding my topic and use the information I have found in research articles or interviews as well. My brainstorming would be, who would be in the interview with me? Am I doing this by myself? Am I being the interview? and the person getting interviewed?. I would like to very much use pathos in the interview. Also, one of my other goals would be to know where I am doing the interview, and the quality I want it to be delivered.

Know your mentor (in class).

I have included the link to the video I would like to emulate. It shows a perfect example of the news reporter interviewing a mother who had survived covid after being hospitalized for four months.

My mentor text would be found on the website CNN where it is very informational, containing many interviews with a serious and informative tone. This example contains a lot of examples of logos, and pathos. The mother had been hospitalized because of COVID and had a 5% of survival, the point of the interview was to encourage people to get vaccinated. So the logos here would be the statistics that if she were vaccinated she would have experienced the symptoms much less and would not have been hospitalized, that is her conclusion of the interview.  The pathos would be that she has 5 children who were told by doctors that she was on the verge of death, allowing the audience to feel the emotions of this family who had their mother in the hospital. This source uses research through the statistics and percentages of people who were hospitalized for longer than 3 months because of the virus who were not vaccinated, and those who were vaccinated and had less dangerous outcomes.
