During today’s live tweet of each person’s Twitter story, we will model networking at a distance–meaning we will engage only through Twitter for responses, retweets, and likes. After each person has a chance to run her story, everyone will come to OpenLab, create a comment beginning with the person’s name who just live tweeted on this post, and write a brief comment about the story focusing on what worked and what could be improved upon. Then, we can talk about the story in a regular class discussion.

This Experience was strange to say the least. Writing a story that had to capture so much detail in 140 characters was not easy but never the less I think it worked out pretty well. It was also interesting to see people actively participating in my story as I shared it; it was like telling them the story in person and having them comment in front of me without that actual affordance.
MARIAH- I loved the raw truth in your story it came from the heart and that is so important when telling a story to any audience big or small. I’m sure hundreds of people can relate to you and your undying will to keep going is such an inspiration. I love how you brought back every downfall with a positive outcome, never did you leave readers thinking this was going to be a sad tale. The only thing I would consider for the future is that only iPhone users (#teamiphone) can see your emojis, androids will see some but others will be squares which will probably confuse them. Overall though I loved this and I can so personally relate to overcoming struggles.
Yes! I know I couldn’t decide if I should or shouldn’t do it but I took the risk. Next time I do not think the story will be as personal or require so many emojis
Mariah, Wow! What a story! I really appreciate how candid you were about your experience with your move to America. There were so many unique obstacles and you over came all of them. It is very inspiring! Also, I enjoyed to emojis. The abbreviation is something that I found distracting. I really loved the back to back engagement with the users, you were quick with your response. Bravo!
I agree. I anticipated some distractions with the abbreviations but it was a risk I had to take being my first time using Twitter and having a story of this magnitude. I hope I didn’t take too much away from my story but was able to still stay true to it.
Mariah: That was a heartfelt story. Your use of emoji and hashtags added a lot to your detailed story. You maximized how to use Twitter’s affordances/constraints. However, some parts of your story required more decompression than others, which likely has more to do with my not knowing the abbreviations and emoji as well as I would like. It’s difficult to balance the needs of a diverse audience on a platform like Twitter.
That was the hardest part trying to maximize a media platform I had never used before. I had so much to say and did not know how to eliminate the words or make the sentence less complex without changing the entire thought. I was hesitant to use emojis and even abbreviated language but I wanted to experiment knowing that I would probably never get this chance again.
Mariah, your tweets were quite descriptive and you told the story very well. Your story tells how you overcame adversity and dramatic changes in your life to make it this far. I like the way use used pictures and emogies to tell your story and even the language you used add to the dramatics of the story. Great storytelling.
Thank you Pam! I thought I would have messed this up so badly but I am happy to see everyone is responding well to my story.
JODIE- Your story is such a great lead for future students to follow, by taking the plunge you found such a rich and rewarding internship. I think your tweets were executed beautifully and concisely and really conveyed each element of the journey and why it was important. Only thing I would add is some emojis girl, show off YOU EARNED IT!!
Awww thank you Samantha! Sometimes the hardest thing is doing something you have never done before and taking a chance on yourself. I am so glad you enjoyed my little story! Yes I need to use some emojis but I didn’t know how to because it was more professional. I can’t wait for your story!!
Jodieann : I love your simple yet powerful story. It really showcased how hardworking and filled with perseverance you truly are. Your story was clean, concise, and very engaging without the use of emojis. (Teach me your ways!)
Awww thank you Mariah! I am so happy you enjoyed my story. I spoke from the heart about my struggle. I am more than happy to show you but trust me there is no magic, you just do it lol. I don’t know how maybe because I am social obsessed.
Jodieann: This was a great story. You remained engaged with the others in the class, too. I liked the photos that you incorporated into your story–this added a lot. You combined story with inspirational elements. It took me longer to see how your bonus tweet fit into your story–as with my comments to Mariah above–we have to develop strategies to help our audiences understand/decode our stories as easily as possible.
Awww thank you Professor Ellis! I am glad you enjoyed my story, I figured it is always best to speak from the heart! Social media is one of my favorite platforms. I am glad I was able to share a personal story on such a unique site. There was a lot to learn from this first round but I would like to merge the story more seamlessly next time.
Jodieann, your tweets are an inspiration and clearly show your determination to get the right internship. It take that kind of persistence to get what you want and your tweets portray that well. I like the build up in your tweets starting from what you want and telling what you are doing to get there. I also like your use of hashtags for emphasis and how honest and open you were in your tweets. Your photo shows how happy you are and the confidence is flowing from you. I know that you will do extremely well in your career.
Awww! Thank you very much Pam! Your comments were spot on! I tried very hard to make sure all of the emotions and my experience come through and I am so glad that it worked. I am so glad you were inspired by the story, it is one we all have to face. Thank you very much 🙂
This was soo much fun!! I enjoy social. I have always had a nag for utilizing social sites. I have had the chance to tweet for companies but I prefer to use my own unique voice for my brand. Live tweeting or tweeting in real time is not a easy task because it requires you to be quick witted and unique.
Pam, Your story was very interesting and I think it generated a lot of conversation outside of the actually story being that so many people have so many views in going vegan. I was always awaiting your next tweet. Great story because it allowed for so much interaction.
Thanks Mariah. You’re right there is more to the story as it is a real issue for a many people. I did try to keep it light but it was a really trying time for me and it’s a battle that still continues. I’m glad that you enjoyed it and that it kept you interested.
PAM- Your twitter story was just too funny, i loved interacting with your tweets and personal experiences. It was on a serious topic but delivered in a light-hearted non bias way that people could relate to. I think your delivery was great and was perfect for this medium!
Thanks Samantha. Yes I did try to make it funny as it is a struggle to me. I was supprised that this exercise helped me to look at my journey and where I am today with me efforts to a comfortable place. Glad you were able to relate and that it worked out.
Pam: This is a great arc–problem, how you deal with it, and then find a new solution beginning a new set of weeks. I really enjoyed your food photos, too. Your messages were easy to read and follow. For a future project, I would suggest having your tweets written out elsewhere so that you can quickly copy and paste them into Twitter instead of composing them again by typing.
Thank you Professor Ellis. I wanted it to lead up to a point and although it was a challenge, I ‘m glad it worked out. Although I had some notes, my thoughts were spontaneous and mostly only came as I typed. I will definitely flush them out in advance next time. Thanks for a challenging and fulfilling exercise.
This was really a challenge. To write and think on the spot was crazy and scary but a great experience. I really enjoyed this and would do it again. Makes me think about those who job it is to tweet really fast such as breaking news. How do they do it?
Pam, What a story! I really enjoyed you sharing your story on the struggles of becoming a vegetarian/vegan because its one we all struggle with! Your Twitter story was very funny, unique and informative! I really liked that you used photos that were very enticing! I’m hungry for sure! I would try to incorporate hashtag or mention a vegan blog recipe you discovered. Bravo!
Thanks Jodieanne. I’m glad you were able to see the humor in the story as I wanted it to be light. Yes it is a struggle for a lot of people. I think I had maybe one hashtag but yes I want my next tweets to have more even interaction. Thanks.
Reflection, This experience was pretty cool, though I use twitter on a daily basis I don’t often in fact I don’t think I have ever posted a story. It was quite a challenge to break 8 years up into 16 tweets and 140 characters but I hope I got the message across. I like interacting with followers and hearing people’s feedback. I love twitter and always have so i’m a big proponent for using it as a medium to deliver information as well as stories and this project was a great way to practice new ways of using it!
@spezzolanti Sam your story gets more inspirational every time I hear it. I enjoyed every aspect of your story. I think you not only executed the project very well but you were able to tell your story with such ease and fluidity. Great job on this and an even better one on always trying to be more not only for yourself but your little human. Beyond proud of you.
My little human lol! She’s the inspiration to all my writing as well as my drive to succeed but without support from peers and mentors I wouldnt have the courage to keep doing any of this!
Sam: This is an excellent story and one well developed for Twitter. You incorporated clear language and photos to fully explain your story. You used pathos to enrich what you had to say. Since you raised the point, we will talk more about analytics this semester, which is an interesting things about digital storytelling that traditional storytelling lacks (or has different measures of).
Thank you Professor Ellis! I’m really intrigued by the analytics and i think it would be a great building block from 2720 to learn more about it. I tried incorporating popular strategy when composing my tweets to deliver my story. It was a great experience i can’t wait to do more!!
Samantha, I thought your tweets were really honest and touching. You were really open and expressed your feelings so well. The pictures you included were great and the also told the story of how you showed persistence in getting your degree. You told a story about finding yourself and having someone to motivate you along your journey. Well done Samantha!
Thanks Pam! its so great to have a fellow mom on this journey too because you can identify with the struggles I’m talking about from first hand experience
Samantha, WOWWW! You shared your story via Twitter quite eloquently! What a unique way to document your rise from challenge to success while doing it beautifully! It was very inspiring! Thank you for sharing. Girl Ava got the best mom ever!!
Aw thank you jodie! I tried to put it in a way where other moms would identify but where people without kids could feel the pride in my experiences too.
