In Retrospect

The experience of Digital Storytelling is one I will take with me for the rest of my academic and student profession. I was able to learn and create narratives across multiple platforms; this practice enabled me to gain the knowledge of different types of narratives along with the best practices to implement them. When we began the class, our first task was to create anon fictional narrative that we will host on Twitter. In this project I was able to experiment with shortened language, emoticons, as well as the integration of images that would help the story.  In this instance the shortened form of  language created a constraint for me; my audience had a hard time understanding the language which interfered with the way they were able to interact with my story. With this noted, in the second fiction YouTube project I was able to create an inviting video which enabled my audience to laugh, share experiences, and invited them to find their way within the story. I told this story with the hopes that I could both entertain and inform students of how best to survive any college experience. I found it to be the hardest practice when creating the actual video, I had never really created a professional production and this project changed my relationship with the care and consideration I now know I have to take when factoring in for the creation of a video.
By the third project, my relationship with telling narratives on various medias had once again evolved. Creating a podcast was by far no easy task, I found myself struggling with the actual recording of the production. I could not get myself to assert the right type of voice that enabled me to bring the message of the podcast across.  I was however able to find my strength in leading in the area of the collaborative aspect of the project. This fortified my relationship with this project and the medium because I was able to assert myself in the relationship of what I was essentially preaching. In the fourth project, there were many constraints thus seeing that I had never worked with HTML in such a long time however I was able to quickly remember and learn basics again to master the project I believe. I was able to create a story that was interactive and helped my audience to interact with the story and the characters. I utilized options of digital storytelling such as rabbit holes to enable my audience to follow the story and in the end make the story more successful. The last and final Twine project was a coming together of all the best practices which I learned through each media platform. I was able to take this last project and integrate the best storytelling aspects, along with interactive medias. This was the best experience within the class for me because I was able to assert the voice I learned to build across the other projects. I found the affordance of Twine itself to be incredibly easy after tackling the HTML project. My relationship across each medium became more and more fortified. I became accustomed with the idea that each medium had a different preexisting standard and I would have to conform to it. It was a great experience and I would enjoy part-taking in a creative process such as this again.

 

 

 

Archiving Final Project, “Patty The Pigeon Takes New York City”

Patty has lived in Chicago all her life but she has always wanted to see the world. One sunny afternoon Patty overhears three geese talking about migrating south and she gets an idea. Patty decides she’s going to migrate to New York City and see what makes the city so special. Patty arrives in New York City and lands at the Statue of liberty where she meets her first friend, a rooster named Francois, who tells her all about the Statue of Liberty and what it has to offer. Francois then sends patty on her way to see the other sites the city has to offer where she meets more New York natives to assist her. Join Patty on her adventure around New York City as she meets new friends who teach her about some of the most notable landmarks in New York!

This fun and interactive fiction is the perfect classroom tool for educators or parents aiming to teach students grades K-5 about the history of New York City. The story is animated and and colorful which is appealing to young users but encompasses facts and history to appeal to parents and teachers. The featured map allows users to track Patty’s journey as well as see an aerial view of the city, like patty would see.

This work of fiction was created by student authors, Mariah Rajah, Samantha Pezzolanti, Jodieann Stephenson and Pamela Drake. All four team members are currently Professional & Technical Writing majors at New York City College of Technology (CUNY) and thus project was created for their Digital Storytelling course.

Beginning of Class Writing: Miller, Digital Storytelling, Chapter 25

During the first ten minutes of class, write your final summary of the semester on Miller’s Digital Storytelling, Chapter 25, “Creating Your Own Showcase.” As a part of your summary, write briefly and provide a link to where you showcase your work now. For example, do you have an ePortfolio on OpenLab or elsewhere? We will discuss this before moving ahead with the remainder of class for work on your collaborative project.

Beginning of Class Writing: Miller, Digital Storytelling, Chapter 24,

During the first ten minutes of class, write your penultimate summary from Miller’s Digital Storytelling, Chapter 24, “Working as a Digital Storyteller.” What were some of the important takeaways from this chapter? What advice might apply more broadly to PTW careers in general? We will discuss these after you have a chance to write and post your own observations based on the reading.

Review of the Robot Presentation

Henrick Christenen presentation on robots in an age of mass urbanization, while discussing customizable products and 3 D printing in healthcare proved to be an interesting dialogue. The topic was very futuristic however it could have delivered better if the presenter’s mic was turned up to a better volume. I was fascinated by the slides on how researchers and developers want to create robots that will serve a purpose by making tasks easier and achievable. It was refreshing to learn how Hollywood has created a negative perception of robots because of movies such as the Terminator or iRobot, the word robot, now has many negative connotations. The presentation was very educational and I enjoyed learning about how life changing new robot technologies can be. Also, how interesting it would be to have robots that resemble humans and can facilitate human reactions and emotions. If these technologies were ever created it would completely change the world, not only just healthcare field. But until that day comes then humans and robots will continue to communicate with many restrictions. For many people, they still dread the days of robots overtaking humans but in reality that will never happen.

On many of the slides, there were acronyms without any explanation. For any random, individual who was in the audience would not have any inkling about the topic at hand. The presenter should be made aware that not many individuals are familiar with the topics and should offer callouts that aides the audience to understanding the topic. Many of the key points that were made in the presentation was a reminder of the simple requests that the aging population has which are similar to the needs of many. There will come a day that we will all age and not having anyone around to help with simple tasks such as trying to pick up the remote controller, pour yourself a cup of coffee or put on your eyeglasses or even take your medicine. Many of these tasks become harder as you age and to have a robot around to help would make it easier for the individual. Preferably to have a robot that resembles a person to become their assistant and help with these tasks. During the presentation, I never considered how important the psychology of having something that resembles a human or has humanistic characteristics plays a role in how we can relate to a certain object.

Another point that was made in the presentation was how the “baby boomers” population is becoming one of the most dominant generations in the U.S., which I thought the millennial generation held traction. This interesting “fact” made me think about in about 15 years my mother will be retiring and how different the technology and medicine will be. Perhaps there will be robots around to help, but what if there aren’t any robots around to help? What will happen to the car industries and the pharmaceutical industries?

Overall, in my humble opinion, I enjoyed the presentation, well the little that I saw. The presenter had a unique candor about him and how presentable and charismatic he was. However as for his presentation skills, I would rate it as a C partly because I could not hear many of the key points that he tried to allude to and for not clearly explaining how the acronyms. From a topics point of view, I really enjoyed learning about robots and the tremendous impact that they will have in the healthcare field. I hope I get to see their contributions in my generation however if not, I hope the next generation will be able to enjoy and can appreciate how impactful the robots will be in everyday life.

Overcoming the Fear of Public Speaking *Archived*

Background

The story revolves around an intern who begins working at JNN Networks as an Intern Assistant to the anchor Deborah Anderson. They work on a top secret for the duration of the internship leading up to the taping date. On the day of the taping, Deborah is nowhere to be found until director John Michael receives a phone call notifying him that Deborah will not be able to tape the segment. The temp anchor tries to learn the topic and lines but struggles. Until the director ask the intern, Louanne since she knows the topic to come on camera and participate in the segment. Will Louanne conquer her fear of public speaking or will she give in to her fear?

Reflection 

When I first discovered that I would be creating a project with HTML, I wanted to cry. When I hear the word HTML, I think of websites, letters and symbols without any meaning. Oh boy was I mistaken. Creating a story within the HTML story interface was a unique and satisfying experience. Truth being told, I don’t like learning complicated software, if I had my choice I would never learn it but I don’t have my choice so I choose to learn it. I guess I feared it at first and naturally I did not want to do it. After weeks of creating the flowchart and playing around with the HTML notepad, I began to open up to learning a new tool. At first, I found it to be incredibly overwhelming and I wanted to give up right then and there but Professor Ellis was so kind to believe in me which I appreciated. The project turned out to be a lot of fun. I enjoyed creating a website, a least having the little background knowledge about how to build a site from scratch. I must say that I have a entirely new appreciate for website developers and will never look at another website the same ever again.

In long run, I appreciate the breakdown of the project. I was introduced to the different aspects of the project and it was scaffold ed which I loved. I would definitely recommend continuing to offer a project like this because it challenges students even when they don’t want to be challenged. I really loved this project.
