Weekly Writing Assignment, Week 7

Watch and take notes on this week’s lecture before proceeding.

Write a memo to Prof. Ellis that presents a basic numbered, process list for your Instruction Manual.

Write as much as needed to show the process in your instruction manual.

However, this is a draft–you may add, subtract, and change as needed later.

Include notes about what images to include with each step as appropriate (think of WOVEN).

We will look at the other components of your Instruction Manual next week.

Copy-and-paste your memo into a comment made to this post on our OpenLab Course Site.

The purpose of this memo is to show the steps needed to install Ubuntu on a virtual machine. The targeted audience is for anyone in a tech related field. The only equipment needed is a computer/laptop. Here are the steps on how to install Ubuntu on a virtual machine:

1.0 First, we need to install a virtual machine. We are going to be using VirtualBox (https://www.virtualbox.org/).
1.1 Navigate to the download page.
1.2 Download the VirtualBox version compatible with your system.
1.3 After download is complete, run the install and follow the instructions.
2.0 Second, we need to get our Ubuntu Desktop iso (https://ubuntu.com/).
2.1 Navigate to the download page for Ubuntu Desktop. Download should start automatically.
2.2 Keep iso in an easily accessible directory.
3.0 Third, we are going to be setting up the virtual machine.
    3.1 Open VirtualBox.
3.2 Click the “New” option to make a new virtual machine.
3.3 Give the virtual machine a name, the directory you want it to be located, the OS type (Linux), and the OS version (Ubuntu). Click “Next”.
3.4 Choose how much ram to allocate to the virtual machine. Click “Next”.
3.5 Choose “Create a virtual hard disk now”. Click “Next”.
    3.6 Choose “VDI”. Click “Next”.
3.7 Choose a storage option that is right for you. Click “Next”.
3.8 Set the size limit for the virtual machine. Click “Next”.
4.0 Fourth, we are now going to install the Ubuntu Desktop OS.
4.1 Click on the just created virtual machine.
4.2 Select the Ubuntu Desktop iso that we downloaded earlier.

1.0 In order to build a virtual network, you will first need to download Cisco packet tracer. Use the following link: https://www.netacad.com/courses/packet-tracer.
1.1 The purpose of this memo is to write a basic instruction manual about how to build a virtual network on cisco packet tracer.
1.2 The intended audience for this can be students who are studying cyber security or any other networking related fields
1.3 In order to download cisco, you will first need to create an account. Once that’s done, you can download the software as it’s compatible with multiple operating systems.
1.4 Once the packet tracer is installed, you will need devices such as a router, PC, and other end user devices. You can also place IoT devices such an AC, fan, fridge, and etc.
1.5 Once you have all of the devices that you want for the network, you will connect them using a wire. You can use the straight- through cable to connect all the devices.
1.6 You then will need to configure the devices so that they can communicate
1.7 Make sure you assign IP addresses, as well as a default gateway address.
2.0 You can manually assign addresses to end user devices
2.1 For this assignment, I will be use pictures from cisco to show the audiences and walk them through the steps
2.2 You also need to configure the ip address.
3.0 Once all the devices are configured, you can then use a ping test to see if they communicate.
3.1 Within the network, you can then assign security to all the devices
3.2 You can also use multiple routers to set up multiple networks and establish communication between them.
3.3 Do a ping test to see if these devices can communicate.
