Beginning of Class Writing: John Medina’s Brain Rules, “Exercise”

During the first ten minutes of class, write a summary of today’s assigned reading from John Medina’s Brain Rules: “Exercise.” Before we meet again next week, type up your summary, save it someplace safe, and copy-and-paste it into a comment to this blog post.

Some questions to consider: What is the relationship between exercise and cognitive function? What are some of the ways exercise help us think better than if we are inactive? How convinced are you by Medina’s argument (and of course, explain why he is or is not convincing to you)?

In John Medina’s Brain Rules, “exercise”, he starts to use an experience from a 70 year old man name Jack LaLane becoming known as “the godfather of American fitness movement.” Due to him being active at age 93, Medina mentions how he is also mentally alert. Later on he starts to use his daily routine to help stay active throughout the day such as using a treadmill instead of drinking coffee. To help us improve in school or at work, he also believes that exercise can help the brain improve thinking skills. Now when we exercise, this helps blood flow and aerobic exercises to be exact helps us have a less risk of Alzheimer’s or general dementia. Exercise can also help with depression and keeps our minds active.

“Exercise” by John Medina basically speaks about the effect that exercise has on your brain. John Medina used one example based on a 70 year old man who benefited from exercising in his old age. This old man used a daily routine of exercising because it would help him stay fit and away from any lack in brain disabilities. Exercising physically can help you mentally because one disability you can avoid is, Alzheimer. Alzheimer was has to do with loss of connection to the brain’s memory and it was also stated in the last class’s 10 minute exercise. John Medina’s Point Of View was convincing because, i exercise when i can and find myself being able to do work at a more comfortable pace.

In the chapter “Exercise” John Medina emphasized on how exercise can boost our thinking skills. An example of that would be Jack Lalanne a man who was also known as “The Godfather of the American fitness moment”. He lived to the age 96. Lalanne was an intelligent person and had a great sense of humor. According to John Medina Lalanne was a “mentally alert” person. This caught my attention because it shows that exercise not only help us physically but it can also helps us mentally. Many researchers conducted that people who exercise are smarter and live longer than people who don’t exercise. Exercise also decreases a person’s chances of getting Dimensia, or Alzheimer. Human’s brain have evolved through walking, the more we walk the better human brain can function and improves thinking skills.

In the second chapter of John Medina’s “Brain Rules”, he goes over the importance of physical fitness not only for the body but also for the mind. Initially, when the body is in motion, our brains can generate ideas at a better pace because during exercise, more blood flows to your brain. It also brings clarity to the mind and allows us to be more mentally aware of various things. John Medina also stated that “ Exercise gets more blood to your brain, bringing it glucose for energy and oxygen to soak the toxic electrons that are left over. It also stimulates the protein that keeps neurons connecting”. Aside from better thinking, exercise also has other benefits such as maintaining a healthy heart which reduces the chances of heart disease, fights against depression and dementia. According to John Medina, a person who is physically fit has more of a chance at living a longer life compared to a person who isn’t physically active at all. It is much more essential to maintain a healthy body now than ever because it helps evolve our brains to unknown levels.

So I have read the chapter2 of John Medina’s “Brain Rules” . It’s all about the benefits of exercising. Mr. John Medina explains that doing exercise is not only beneficial for our body ,but also for the brain and mind. In order to explain that Mr. John Medina used an example , He talked about a guy named “Jack LaLane”. He was a 70 year old man who benefited himself by working out regularly. This old man had a fixed program( exercising plan) , which helped him to staying in shape and prevented him from getting any brain disabilities. The old man was mentally alert and aware of his surrounding even to the very last days of his life .It works something like this: when the body struggles physically, more blood flows through the body. Even in the brain. So it brings clarity to our mind and allows us to be more mentally aware of everything. John Medina has also stated that the people who are physically active has more chance at living a longer life than to someone who is a couch-potato .

In John Medina’s Brain Rules, “exercise”, goes over and explains how exercise plays a great importance in the human brain’s development and the comparison with the human brain with evolution. Medina talks about how different our ancestors lifestyles we so completely different from our today that we did not change other than physically. He says “ our ancestors constantly encountered new food sources, new predators, new physical dangers”. “ they suffered injuries, experienced strange illnesses, and delivered and nurtured offsprings, all without the benefits of textbooks or modern medicine. With all the access that we have to resources, information, technology etc. Unlike them we don’t have enough body for chilly nights or even navigational skills to travel halfway around the world without a map or compass. In comparison to our ancestors , can we really say we evolved in physical strength? these data tell us is that we grew up in top physical shape, or we didn’t grow up at all. Why is exercise so important? Medina states the reason for longer life is that exercise improves cardiovascular fitness, which reduces risk of diseases such as heart attacks and strokes. More exercise proves to improve not only long term but a big change in the improvement in short term as well. Exercise provides the human body with greater access to oxygen and food. The more exercise the more tissues you can fee and he more toxic waste can be removed. According to John Medina, a person who is physically fit has more of a chance at living a longer life compared to a person who isn’t physically active increases their chance of living a longer and decrease their chance of getting diseases compared to a person who isn’t as physically active. As john would say “ a couch potato”. Studies also show that exercise leads to kids with better attention spans, they are less disruptive, have higher self esteem, less depression and less anxiety. Exercise is not only important to humans physical growth but also their mental growth.

    Exercise

In this chapter called “Exercise” by Dr. John Medina mostly talks about how exercising keeps the human body in a good and healthy shape. Exercising also keeps away heart attacks and other diseases such as Alzheimer. Dr. John Medina also states that exercising could also benefit how a person can age, for example if a person even walks for about 20 minutes a day for the rest of their lives, then would age gracefully. Exercising should be a very important part our daily lives because not only does it keeps us healthy but it also gives us great satisfaction knowing that you’ve done something productive today.

Does exercise help kids do better at school ? Well studies have shown that physically fit children identify visual stimuli much faster then sedentary ones. They appear to rate better. Exercising is a choice because only a person can decide on how he or she wants to live their lives. When it comes to staying fit food is a very important factor because only food can determine how healthy you really are. For example if you have a unhealthy diet but then you exercise at the same time, it wont be as beneficial because you’re pretty much throwing it all away by putting sugary and high in cholesterol products into your system. If you want live longer then you should exercise on a regular basis.

Exercise is a very important aspect of human nature, this helps your body, mind and soul be more responsive and active. You will be able to have better health, living a life full of longevity, you will feel unstoppable, living a life you can conquer and there is no better feeling than that. Once your brain is idle, you won’t be able to get much things done. Once you’re exercising, you are pushing yourself to be a greater you. This will ultimately challenge your brain and help to keep it young and be able to obtain a great deal of knowledge. The chapter about Exercise in John Medina’s Brain Rules, gives readers a very moving story about an older guy who was very strong minded, this man was 70 years old and he towed 70 boats 1-1/2 miles with passengers in them, battling strong winds and currents. This was the guy who exercised his will power, his mind, body and soul, he invented first leg-extension machines, to the modern gym. It turns out that there is definitely a relationship between exercise and mental alertness, you feel you are losing your mind, literary just get a good workout and you’ll be healthier mentally, physically maybe even emotionally. The more to exercise throughout your life, the longer your life will be, because people with less activity levels were more likely to have poor cognitive performances, of c course these leads to how much exercising can keep you looking young and responding rapidly. I feel like this chapter is very motivating and aspiring, it tells how much physically fit children identify visual stimuli much faster than sedentary ones, this will help us do better in school and right now I am going to do sit-ups, jumping jacks and some cardio,I hope to continue this every week.

In “Exercise” chapter 2 of “Brain Rules” Jon Medina explained that exercise is important for our brain because it make our brain and body fit. He talked about 70 years old person whose name was Jack Lalane. He is known as “the godfather of American fitness movement.” He is active at age of 93 and Medina stated that he is mentally alert. He exercises daily to stay active for whole day. This shows that exercising make person physically and mentally fit. It also decreases the chances of Dimensia or Alzheimer. He also stated that by walking our brain stay more active and evolve through time. By exercising we have more chances of living longer than the other person and can prevent disability.

  10. Cisco Alers

Our brains developed while we were exercising or moving. It is scientifically proven that a person that is less activate and has a less active body, has a less active brain. Basically another reason why exercising is a necessity for not only our body, but our brain as well. An 80 year old person is more like past 80 and avoid less diseases if that person is to stay active. Exercise helps increase the amount of oxygen intake you get. The more oxygen you get the more electrons you absorb from the brain, letting the brain become more active. This also helps students study by better recalling the memory for a question needed on a test.

For the first actual chapter in the book “Brain Rules” exercise, was mostly about maintaining the brain active.By exercising your body is benifits your brian power, and of course your muscles.Excersie does alot of postive healthy choices to your body.It prevents heart disease and depressions.Exercise by past history accoring to whta John medina said “the following population of our direct ancestor is not thought to have been much larger than 2,00 indivuals, some think the group was asmall as a few hundred. How ,Then ,did we go from such a wobbly fragile minority population to a staggering tide of humanity seven billion strong and growing?”meaning not a lot of humans are interested in past history or some people may not suspect the way people survived back then.According to Richard Potts which is a director of the human origins program at the smithsonian’s national museum of natural history, says “we gave up stability ,we began not to care about consistency within a given habitat” meaning people currently don’t care about the history .Which leads up to making history the future.

As we all know John Medina is a molecular Biologists. He covers many different subjects and aspects in his famous and well received book title “Brain Rules”. The next chapter in his book, “Exercise” gives a detailed explanation in regards to Exercise and how the brain is affected by it. One should keep in mind that there is a interesting relationship between exercise and cognition. Exercise has the ability to increase the performance of the brain and how it functions on its own and it also helps in a more important factor and area, retaining memories and the ability to learn things. There are also various ways in which exercise can help us think better and make us more healthy. For example, exercise can help reduce your stress and mood levels, improve sleep as well as it helps strengthen your mentality. Honestly, I agree with John Medina’s argument about exercise because it makes sense and his facts have strong points and have barely any issue’s.

In Medina’s next chapter, ‘Exercises’ he goes on to explain how and why exercise is a crucial factor for our brains. Medina talks about how exercise is not only a healthy way to stay fit but also how it impacts the brain and body in a positive way, by making our brains work more with our each movement. He also refers to a ‘Jack Lalanne’ an individual who was fit throughout their life because exercise helped his physical appearance along with his mental brain power. This is what Medina means when he talks about how being fit can increase the lifespan of individual rather than an individual who does not exercise. Overall exercise is benefits not only the physical body but as well as our brain in a positive way.

In chapter 2 of John Medina’s “Brain Rules”, he talks about exercise and how it affects us humans as a whole. Exercise keeps the body and brain in good health for the long run if it is done consistently. Exercise affects you physically and emotionally. You will have higher self esteem and less anxiety. Your attention would also increase due to the fact that your body is more aware. When the body is moving, the brain’s power increases and functions at a faster pace. A person is not physically active is missing out on the advantages and is at a disadvantage. They are more prone to anxiety and will be used to not moving, and they will also be more prone to diseases. I agree with John Medina’s theory, because people who exercise are at a better place physically and emotionally, and those people are said to live longer.

In the second chapter of John Medina’s book, “Brain Rules”, he details the effect exercise has on the brain. Most people know the connection between exercise and physical strength, but not that between exercise and mental strength. According to the chapter, people who lead more active lifestyles score higher on cognitive brain tests than those who live more sedentary lifestyles. His research goes as far as to suggest that a person who leads a sedentary lifestyle can improve his brain and therefore his test scores by becoming active. This is because in primal human nature, motion and action were constant and necessary for survival, and thus our brains have adapted to this, and they function at higher levels when the body is moving. These improvements come due to the increased oxygen flow of the brain, stimulated by exercise, which increases heart rate, and the fact that the brain produces neurons that are stronger and live longer than normally when the body is exercising. These “super” neurons are also produced faster than normal ones, which increases the benefit even further.

In John Medina’s “Exercise” chapter he speaks about how exercise is essential to the brain and how it functions. He says how it is essential to how the brain works and helps it function better. Medina says that all schools should have physical education because it helps the students when it comes to learning. He thinks physical education should be implemented in every school. Medina also mentions how our brains were meant for walking twelve miles a day. Even though that is hard to believe it is in fact true. He also says that exercising gets blood to your brain and it brings glucose for energy and oxygen to soak up the toxic electrons that are left over. It also gets the protein that keeps your neurons connecting flowing. Exercising also helps get rid of at least half of your risk of getting dementia or Alzheimer’s. To sum up this entire entry, exercise is a brain boost.

In that chapter since it’s called the Excersice . I believe Madina was explaining he differents exercise to do to and not to do to keep the brain sharp and working. To deprive it from all the Disease we can get from growing old. I was always told that high excise in the body makes your blood flow smothly and keep you brain sick.
