“Exploring City Tech’s Radiologic Technology and Medical Imaging and a Career in Radiologic Technology by Penelope Morales”

“In recent years, the increasing complexity of radiologic procedures and the continuing emphasis upon the elevation of prescribed standards of practice set forth by the Bureau of Environmental Radiation Protection of New York State have made radiologic technology and medical imaging a highly specialized and sophisticated science requiring competently trained personnel” (City Tech). My name is Penelope Morales and I am a Radiologic Technology and Medical Imaging major student at City Tech. I am pursing an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree in Radiologic Technology. The career I am looking to acquire after obtaining my AAS is as a radiologic technologist. I know this is the best career path for me because I am fascinated with how diagnostic imaging works; I have a desire to work in the medical field, and best of all, this career can lead to an array of specialty areas of practice to advance my career. In this essay, I will inform you on what radiologic technology and medical imaging is, what being a radiologic technologist entails and how my education at City Tech will get me there.

In this major, I will learn how to “be skilled in the academic and clinical components of radiologic technology, communicate effectively in a heath care setting and will formulate technique factors and demonstrate skills in critical thinking and problem- solving as required of a radiologic technologist” (City Tech). Upon graduation, my career options will range from being employed in hospitals to urgent care facilities as a radiologic technologist. I will also be “eligible to take the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) examination for certification and New York State Licensure” (City Tech). I specifically want to use the education I receive at City Tech as a stepping-stone for a BS in this major or certification in a particular specialty.

Radiologic technology and medical imaging is a range of diagnostic imaging techniques, which includes X-rays, computed tomography (CT) scans, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and sonography. These techniques take pictures, which helps locate an injury or illness, and confirms that the diagnosis is correct. With the exception of sonography, radiation is used to capture these images. Radiologic technology is a mix of art and science, which fascinates me. The visuals produced from diagnostic imaging tell a story. The story behind these images can save or destroy a person’s life. For example, diagnostic imaging can see where a coin is located in a child’s nose or locate a tumor a patient knew nothing about.

Being a cancer survivor has given me a newfound purpose in life and a part of that is my desire to work in the medical field. I know this is the right career path for me because I have the empathy this job requires. I have been in a similar health situation and can personally relate with patients I will encounter with day to day. The impact my medical care team had on me during my treatment left an imprint on my heart. They have inspired my passion for involvement in the patient and health care field. Having this medical platform will allow me to help, encourage and support individuals that are trying to find reasons behind their illness and sickness. With my newfound purpose, I appreciate and believe my time I have left on this earth is valuable. This career offers flexibility in its scheduling, from working part time or weekends, giving me more time to spend with friends and family.

Radiologic technologist, also known as X ray technologist, uses x-ray equipment to produce 2-D and 3-D images of inside the body. Radiologic technologists work very closely with patients. They explain what type of imaging is about to take place and answer any questions the patient may have. Then, the radiologic technologist positions the patient to create the best quality images as possible. To ensure the patient’s safety from radiation, the technologist provides a lead apron to the areas of the body not needed for the X-ray. “Once the imaging equipment is set up and turned on, the X-rays pass through the patient’s body to X-ray film underneath, creating an image the technologist then develops” (Wilson, par. 4). The images are then sent to the doctor (a radiologist) who reads the X-ray and provides a correct diagnosis. Beyond broken bones, X-rays also can take images of other parts of the body such as the abdomen and lungs. Aside from a radiologist technologist, there are other positions that contribute to this field and depending on specialty, are in high demand.

Starting a career as a radiologic technologist is just the beginning to an endless pool of opportunities. “Increases in medical technology have created many specialties in the radiological field” (Wilson par. 8). With further education, a radiologic technologist can advance their career in specialties such as sonography, CT and MRI. Sonography, or ultrasound, uses sound waves to create images. CT and MRI technology “are similar to those of radiologic technology except that they rely more on computers that work in conjunction with imaging equipment” (Wilson par. 12). There are also a number of post- primary specialties that are not limited to, but include mammography, bone densitometry and cardiovascular technology. With these vast specialized areas comes many benefits such as monetary, knowledge and professional gain. Technologists with more than one post primary specialty are highly desirable within the health care industry. If I were to pick a specialty, my interest would be in sonography. As a sonographer, I would focus on cardiovascular technology as a post secondary specialty. With this specialty I would like to perform echocardiograms, which are sonograms of the heart. Continuing my education at City Tech will bring me a step closer to having the career I desire.

“City Tech’s comprehensive program provides students with the special knowledge and skills required for the practice of radiologic technology and medical imaging” (City Tech). My education at City Tech will prepare me to enter the field of radiologic technology as a qualified healthcare professional. Academic courses include but are not limited to human anatomy, radiographic physics and radiation safety. I will also learn how to use diagnostic imaging equipment to acquire images. Aside from the academics, I will receive hands- on clinical training at an off- site health care facility. This experience will allow me to practice my technical skills and communication with patients. It will also give me the opportunity to work with other heath care team members.

Seeing what is required of a radiologic technologist, are you interested? If so, having an interest in math and science is a plus and you have to stay focused. You will have to complete a set of pre-requisites before applying for the program. This program is very competitive and has limited seats. “Due to the high number of applicants to the clinical phase of the program in the past two years, the average GPA, for acceptance to the program has been approximately 3.5 or higher” (City Tech).   My advice would be to concentrate on your pre- requisites. Aim high and do not allow yourself to get a grade lower than a B. Remember why you chose this career. Whether you have a passion for helping people or are interested in professional growth within the radiologic field, your limitations in this major are based on your own abilities and interests. The array of radiologic technology to learn keeps this field exciting and new. The possibilities are endless.

1. Vision

My name is Shawn Williams, I am outgoing and very ambitious. I am a student at New York City College of Technology, who is pursuing a Bachelors in Hospitality Management. My career is in Hospitality Management. In this essay I will prove why Hospitality Management is the best major for me, because once I attain my degree, I want to open up my own restaurant. I have a lot of experience in the cooking field. I feel I have a niche for what people like to eat. What I need now is the knowledge on how to manage and maintain a successful restaurant, knowing how to pick a strategic location and making a great menu. I hope to learn all of this in Hospitality Management.

Some of the things that New York City College of Technology Catalog said I will learn if I apply myself in these courses is, “the principles of cost control, menu and recipe structure, plating techniques, and flavor profiles.(New York City College Of Technology College Catalog pg.171) I will also learn current and future direction of restaurant management, operations, marketing and personal management as they affect community, and marketplace trends. In addition I will, understand the role of menu planning and design in historic and contemporary terms, explore pricing strategies, design elements, seasonal and theme-based fare, kitchen expertise, market segmentation and customer perceptions.(New York City College Of Technology College Catalog pg.173) Many Alumni have become accomplished as executives chefs, directors of housekeeping, human resources directors, food and beverage directors, restaurant owners, district food service managers, directors of marketing and general managers”. Within my Major I like the fact that I have a lot of different job options. (New York City College Of Technology College Catalog pg.174)

Working in the cooking field was the only real job I ever held in my life. Sometimes I wonder am I jumping the gun too fast because I really have not experienced anything else. I am currently working as a office assistant. I like the work, it is easy and fun, and I enjoy being around people. But I do not see where there is a opportunity for me to advance quickly to becoming the head of an office, like it would be for me to work a year or two as an food service manager, and then venture out on my own to own my own restaurant. I feel I have an better chance to succeed in the cooking field. I have responsibilities and I am not as young as I used to be,so I have to choose quickly and wisely.

My dream is to own my own restaurant. But I know I will need experience on how to run a restaurant before I can make that dream come true. I may need to work as a food service manager before I can own my own restaurant. So I inquired about the pay and job availability. Becoming a Food Service Manager will give me the experience I need to run and operate a successful restaurant. According to The Occupational Outlook handbook in 2012 the median pay for a food service manager was forty-seven thousand nine hundred and sixty dollars per year and twenty-three dollars and six cents per hour. Also, there will be an two percent increase in the job field of food service managing.(Occupational Outlook Handbook,2014-15)

2. Action

I work in the office of my major and the Chairperson is very inspiring. We talk all the time and she shows so much interest in my schooling. I get to meet all the Professors outside of the classroom. I do not try to manipulate or take advantage of working in the office. Many Alumni come back with such great success stories. I am almost blown away with excitement and anticipation. I interviewed one of my future Professors in my major. His name is Professor Robert Walljasper,I asked him ‘does it feel like you have achieved the level of success you planned on achieving when you first started your career?’ His reply was “I feel like I have achieved that level many times, but once I am there, there is always something else for me to accomplish.”( Walljasper Robert. Personal Interview. 14 April 2015.) When I heard that I was truly inspired, because I could see the glimmer in his eyes of satisfaction, perseverance and happiness. I knew he was happy because he is doing something he loves everyday. And the satisfaction came from all the accomplishments along with the perseverance of no matter how hard the next goal may be he will succeed.

One of the things that motivates me to be a part of and take Hospitality Management as my major is that I want to make a comfortable amount of money and live nice. I watch a lot of cooking shows and I feel like I have the charisma, looks, but not the skills yet to be very successful in my career. I want to be able to drive any car I want. I want a big house. I want to leave wealth and a legacy for my children. I know with the marketing ideas I have,I can go very far. All I will say is that it is something that is not offered to a large group of people in the cooking field.

3. Execute

Work is not work if you enjoy doing it. That is my other reason for choosing Hospitality Management. I have worked in a couple of kitchens and I really enjoyed bringing happiness to people through food. I love the interaction. I am naturally a people’s person. I like to see people smile and be happy. The feeling of working in a restaurant and having a lot of customers waiting to eat the food I cooked is indescribable. One of the Professors in Hospitality Management is William Moore. I asked him “what does it take to succeed in this industry?” He said “Passion,it takes a lot of passion, because it is a tough field, but if you have passion for what you do you can succeed.” (Moore William. Personal Interview. 16 April 2015.) I think it takes passion and commitment to succeed in any field, but hearing it come from him was truly encouraging and very informative.

To be able to make someone happy just from giving them something to eat or providing a certain kind of food that they cannot get anywhere else, truly makes me happy. I have experienced that feeling myself,of not being able to find a certain type of food, but once I have,I felt gratitude and tremendous joy to that establishment. And when the food is good and the service is nice and friendly, they have my stomach and loyalty. My restaurant will be the place to eat of who’s who. But once every six months I will turn it into a soup kitchen to feed the homeless. And yes, they will eat the good food. I want the kind of establishment where, when you enter you feel like you are at home. That is what I want from people that will visit my restaurant.

If you are interested in Hospitality Management as your major, you should have both of these things and a lot of them, and they are passion and determination. You will need these two things to accomplish your goals and be successful. I am learning this valuable lesson everyday, from studying to getting up early so I can get to class on time. A quote ‘Nothing in the world is worth having or worth doing unless it means effort, pain, difficulty… I have never in my life envied a human being who led an easy life. I have envied a great many people who led difficult lives and led them well.”
― Theodore Roosevelt Nothing that is great will come easy.

PROJECT # 2

Exploring City Tech’s Mechanical Engineering Technology Major and a Career in The U.S Coast Guard.

I am Mohammad and I attend New York City College of Technology. My major is Mechanical Engineering Technology. For my career I plan to become a U.S. Coast Guard Officer with a degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology. These are the best career choices for me because Engineers and Coast Guard Officers are needed worldwide. The Coast Guard Officer Job is related to my favorite hobby, which is swimming, and it is related to Homeland Security, which is what I have always dreamed of doing. Engineering is ranked one of the most employed careers in the United States. It also has one of the best pay rates in the country and even in other countries.Based on those criteria, I think I have a better chance of success in this field. In this essay, I will first write about the requirements to become a successful college student with a Mechanical Engineering Technologydegree. I will then write about the jobs available in the market for mechanical engineers.Lastly, I will write abouthow a degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology will help me boost my chance in the Coast Guard and what is the duty of a mechanical engineer in the US Coast Guard.

As a Mechanical Engineer at New York City College of Technology, we learn how to use machines to make our products and how to use the proper softwares for our drawings and machine designs. According to the New York City College of Technology catalog, “A balanced curriculum provides a solid foundation in the scientific and mathematical principles on which mechanical design is used, as well as ample hands on experience in our well-equipped laboratories”. As a City Tech student, I want to be able to use the machines that I need for my major accurately and advantageously. For example, the lathe, the horizontal and vertical milling machine, the drilling machine and the CNC machine, etc. After triumphantly completing my bachelor degree at New York City College of Technology, there are morechances that I would be employed in an Engineer-based company like Verizon, Con Edison and many more. Although it was not stated in the catalog, a degree in Mechanical Engineering will boost my chances of being in the United States Coast Guard program since they also seek engineers to work for them.

The job market for mechanical engineering is wide. Mechanical engineers are known for inventing, making, repairing, and testing tools, machines, and many more. Basedon the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistic, “Mechanical engineers generally work in professional office settings. They may occasionally visit worksites where a problem or piece of equipment needs their personal attention. In most settings, they work with other engineers, engineering technicians, and other professionals as part of a team.” People think of mechanical engineers as people in an auto shop although it is more like an office job where they spent most of the time drawing or inventing things in the computer. According to the “Engineer Salaries: Good News, So-So News” article by Robert Beverly, “The good news for young engineers is, once we get into the intra-engineering competition for employment, mechanical engineering projects the second-largest amount of projected job openings at 99,600”. Competitive companies like Verizon, Con Edison, car companies and many more are seeking mechanical engineers because they are the ones to create and make something unique for the company and make the company a more competitive and productive company. For example, the competition between the Apple Incorporation and Android Incorporation is huge. They are both seeking mechanical engineers who know how to use the most recent softwares to make the designs. Thisis why they are looking for mechanical engineers who have recently graduated college since they have a more innovative mind, modern knowledge, proficiency in the latest technology and the skillset. The companies’ future depends on these engineers to make their products better than any other companies that they are competing with. In order for these companies to stay in the market competition, they need to update their engineers or hire new ones. This means that the more recent you get your bachelor degree, the better chance you have in the industry. As soon as you get your degree, you have to get hired or your chances of finding a job decreases.

Being a part of the United States Coast Guard is my number one dream. After successfully completing my Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, I have a better chance to become a Coast Guard Officer because I have a higher level of education. On top of that I am an engineer. As I mentioned before, they are seeking mechanical engineer like any other competitive companies out there. Based on the U.S Coast Guard Career website, mechanical engineers are needed in the Coast Guard to become Machinery Technician which is also called MK’s. “MK’s maintain engineering systems at virtually every Coast Guard unit and actively participate in operational missions. Technical training and experiences obtained are comparable with occupations in commercial engineering and law enforcement field”. Most people enter to become a Coast Guard immediately after obtaining a High school diploma while I am planning to enter after I receive my bachelor’s degree, so that my chances of being hired for that position is greater. Mechanical engineers are necessary to ensure all equipment work perfectly and if there is a problem with an equipment, there is someone present to resolve the problem. Without the equipment working properly, Coast Guard Officers would not be properly equip and able to protect our borders as they are today.

Studying Mechanical Engineering Technology at City Tech plays an integral role in my career. This major boosts my chances of entering the United States Coast Guard. Mechanical Engineering involves designing and manufacturing products, buildings, etc and at City Tech, with our well equipped Laboratory, our faculties help us design and make some products from small individual parts and devices to large systems. It helps us prepare for the real world out there. These large systems are used in the society. In the Mechanical Engineering field, knowledge, understanding, creativity, innovation and a broad range of skills are necessary in order to be successful and at City Tech, based on the City Tech catalog, “The Mechanical Engineering Technology program provides the fundamental knowledge and skills necessary for success in a broad range of technical career”. These aspects correlate with the core values of being a Coast Guard. Both fields show me that I am needed in the society which is what I dreamt of accomplishing all of my life. Serving the community does not only impact myself but it also has a positive role on the society.

In conclusion, as a Mechanical Engineer student at City Tech, all I can say is that I made the right decision on choosing this major. I do not have a second thought on choosing another major because Mechanical Engineering Technology is the only major I can see myself comfortably fitting into. My only desire when I began college was to have hands on experience and I am getting the hands on experience every time I attend City Tech which helps me to learn and succeed. If you are tactile and like to beinvolved in designing and manufacturing products, buildings, etc.then Mechanical Engineering Technology is the right major for you at City Tech. Based on my research, Mechanical Engineers are increasingly needed, so finding a job after getting a bachelor degree should not be difficult. At City Tech, although you are enrolled for a bachelor program in Mechanical Engineering Technology, you have the ability to receive an associate degree while pursuing your bachelor degree. This option was organized by the department to promote working at a job in the Mechanical Engineering field while attending college. It gives you more knowledge and better chances of success.Anyone who is unwilling to get their hands dirty, should reconsider if this is the right field for them. Although we spent most of our time drawing in the computer, we sometimes make those drawings in the lab, and that requires a lot of dirty work. Engineers turn ideas into reality.

Exploring City Tech’s Marketing Management and Sales Major and a Career in Business by Shyanne Spencer

1907476_899755900076232_7496473833741819667_n

As a student here at City Tech, there are many opportunities here for individuals that seek for great success in their dream career fields. My name is Shyanne Spencer and I am studying Marketing Management for my Associates Degree. Since City Tech does not provide a music major, I will then transfer to The City College of New York to study Music for my Bachelors Degree. These two major choices are the best for my career because I plan to own my own business and become an Entertainer.  Marketing is the best career choice for me, because I’ve always dreamed of owning my own business, whether it’s a clothing line or a record label. The reason why I chose to study music as well is because, I’ve always had the passion for singing and I would want to keep my vocal skills strong and learn more about the history of music and how to read the music notes rather than just listen to a tune and play it. I want to actually know how to read the notes fluently so that when I start doing performances on the piano or guitar, I wouldn’t have any trouble understanding what is placed in front of me.

The Marketing program is set out for students who are interested in having dynamic careers in the 21st century. As stated in the course catalog of City Tech, this program helps students prepare for tomorrow’s business opportunities and receive a good education and sensitivity to cultural diversity, environmental concerns, technological changes and ethical issues to smooth the way for the exchange of goods and services in the global marketplace. The material and ideas given to us from this major is basically to prepare us students for a wide range of business opportunities in marketing’s fast paced and highly competitive world. We learn also how to obtain a career in fields such as marketing management, marketing research, professional selling and advertising. We would also have hands on experience such as actually pretending to sell a product to the class or through field trips. Even special tours that enhance our learning experience. There are many career options in this field once you have earned your degree. Many people went off to owning their own businesses such as a clothing line, record label, retail stores, even online businesses. Now the reason why I said some individuals went off to having online businesses is because according to the article “Usage of It’s Tools in E-Marketing Campaign Design and Management in Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises”, authors Piotr  and Mateusz  Muryjas states that “As of today, the Internet is one of the most important determinants of the progress of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). In contemporary business, the global network is perceived as the main channel for the marketing and sales of products and services”(Issue 67, p70-83). With that being stated you could see that e-marketing is one of the most efficient ways to reach your clients. With the increasing number of Internet users daily, this confirms that it is worthwhile to conduct marketing campaigns that are focused on the Internet and its users. After receiving my education from City Tech for my associates in this major, I would then transfer over to City College to continue on with my education for my bachelors in Music.

The mission of the Music Department as stated on the college website of The City College of New York is to offer high quality undergraduate major programs concentrating on musicology (history and theory), composition, performance, and popular music studies leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree(B.A.). The program is provided with professional training in classical and jazz performance, music education, and music & audio production technology, leading to the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree (B.F.A). Students would learn how to demonstrate basic proficiency on a keyboard instrument and develop the ability to sight-sing tonal music, and take basic melodic and harmonic dictation. Demonstrate and apply the concepts and practical hands-on experience with basic acoustics and electricity, computer technologies, digital audio and MIDI sequencing, synthesis, signal processing including dynamic, time, pitch, and equalization processing, microphone techniques, sampling, internet audio, audio for film, video, animation, mixing, mastering radio sound and sound reinforcement.

                                                   13674_898416716876817_4808735861366545792_n

Ever since I was in middle school I have always have the thoughts and dream of becoming a business woman. Just the thought of running my own business I use to say, “I can’t wait to be my own boss and put my ideas out there for amazing products everyone would love”. Every time an idea came to my mind I would immediately grab a book or piece of paper to write it or sketch it out. Whether it was a little song I thought up or some kind of outfit that I thought would would be the next big trend or even a nice pair of shoes. I’ve just always came up with good ideas. I figured since I was so good with coming up with such great ideas why not study something that would help me get them out there in the future. Owning a record label would be great because I would get to search for those who have the same passion for become a musician as I do and watch them become successful and happy artists.

Studying Marketing Management at City Tech will prepare me for my future as a marketer because the education that I receive will prepare me for many business opportunities and I would know exactly what is legal to do and illegal to not do. I would know what audience I would want to attract for a specific product so that it will sell better in the market to those who would enjoy it. After talking with Professor Kimberly Ayoung, she says that you would have to have really tough skin in order to handle the criticism in the business because not all of your products you release will be a success. Ayoung has taught us the basics such as having a supply chain which is all the activities associated with the flow and transformation of the product from raw materials through to the end consumer. While searching on the Occupational Outlook Handbook, the annual wage of marketing managers make is about $137,400. The outcome after receiving my degree in this major, I would be able to plan, direct, or coordinate marketing policies and programs, such as determining the demand for products and services offered by a firm and its competitors, and identify potential customers.

Yamaha-Grand-Piano-Keyboard

Studying a music major at City College would be very beneficial for me as it prepares me to better understand the concept of music by learning how to read the notes better, strengthen my vocal cords and learn how to create instrumentals using the Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI), which is stated on the college website as a course. MIDI is a connectivity standard that musicians use to hook together musical instruments (such as keyboards and synthesizers) and computer equipment. Using MIDI, a musician can easily create and edit digital music tracks. The MIDI system records the notes played, the length of the notes, the dynamics (volume alterations), the tempo, the instrument being played, and hundreds of other parameters, called control changes. The education that I will receive from City College will prepare me for my career because I will gain more knowledge about music and strengthen my vocal skills.

As Professor Ayoung has told me this semester you have to have really tough skin with running your own business because there will be days when your product turns out successful and days when your product just does not make a sale at all. If you’re planning to take up Marketing Management here at New York City College of Technology, make sure that it’s the best choice for you. You shouldn’t just choose this major just to make profit, you have to actually know who you’re targeting for your products you put out, and if it function the way you say it does, and to never burn your bridges. That means if you are doing business with someone and you treat them wrong in any kind of way throughout the time you’re working with them, you might bump into that same person again with doing another business. Also you wouldn’t want horrible reviews on yourself and your company which causes others to refuse to work with you. Honestly, when I first thought of having my own business, I said to myself I don’t have any clue of the principles and essentials I would need to market my own business. That’s why I have decided to study in Marketing Management for my Associates so I can have a clear understanding of how the business industry operates. I recommend that you think clearly about the path of the career in which you wish to pursue in. If you’re dream career is Marketing go for it. But just remember, this career isn’t suitable for everyone. The competition grows by the second so you should ask yourself, “Can I handle the critics of my product if it does not succeed? and “Is this really something I’m passionate about?”.

Have you had an experience where your memory or recollection of yourself or something that you have done did not match what others remember? Borrowing from Gottschall, have you experienced a time when we might not be the heroes we think we are in our own epics?
