In John Medina’s “Brain Rules, Music”, Medina discusses how music affects our brain. Music is universal. It has many sounds, instruments, beats, and genres. It is a form of language and expression. Music is beneficial for the brain. It can cure what ails you, hence what Medina mentioned in the chapter how music made Henry, the dementia patient, alive again. Music has a great affect on our moods. Based on the chapter, when we listen to our favorite songs, we release dopamine, cortisol and oxytocin in our brains which causes us to feel pleasure. I have several favorite songs that I listen to for each mood that I’m in at the moment. I listen to music everyday at any given moment. Music controls my thoughts. It keeps my mind at ease since my mind is always flooded with millions of random thoughts.

Music to me has a huge impact on all of our lives. Everywhere we go we hear some type of music. From the time we wake up to the time we go to sleep we constantly hear it. Music plays an important role in my life because I love music and to me without music, the world wouldn’t be the same without it. The use of music plays basically in my everyday life. I listen to music to study, walk to and from school, relax, when I’m happy, sad, angry, bored, anytime. When I study I listen to calm instrumentals like R&B, classical, jazz, soul. As I do more active things like exercising or chores I listen to anything more upbeat like hip hop, rock, pop, rap and more. I think music plays a huge role in everyone’s life. It’s basically what makes us human and to allow us to escape into another world as we listen to the music that tells a story.

Music is a lifestyle. It is a way of life. I don’t believe this world could survive without music. Medina’s “Music” chapter discusses the ideas of how music affects our memories. Medina speaks about a dementia patient who through music, made the person feel alive again. Music is usually the perfect rehab for any kind of sickness. It may have the ability to cure a disease but music can always make a person feel better. Music plays a huge role in the type of person we become. From personal experience I can say some of my friends are they way they are because of the type of music they listen to constantly. When we listen to some of our favorite genre dopamine is released through the brain which gives us that pleasurable experience. Im into a lot of different genres of music which usually depends on the kind of mood I am in. Music plays a huge role in life, I could just go on for pages about it.

The chapter “Music” explains the acts of music. Music is all around us, whether it’s a genre of music that you like or dislike, it will always be a vital communication tool to express human being’s current emotions. Music training can improve, not just human speech, but math, reading abilities, and your IQ. Music also improves various part of your social skills. Enabling a response towards someone through music brings more impact to the subject. Our minds remember better when a particular emotion is tied within a specific situation, music is one of many ways to accomplish the emotional part of a memory. Music can also show a person’s mood. What I found the best to know a person’s mood for that day is to ask them “what song(s) do you listen to recently”. This makes me aware of certain conditions that the person is currently undergoing and I have conversations relating to that particular subject or sway away from the particular subject if the person dislikes it. Music in my life is very important, it helps me relate to many of my friends and peers. Also it can lighten up my mood during a long day of work and classes.

Music is a form of art used to express feelings. As stated by JM, “Study or listen to boost cognition.” I interpret this to mean music can help improve one’s intelligence, Their understanding of persons feelings, the knowledge of how people feel. Said music may indicate some knowledge her feelings that fall under the depressive category. Is it the music that makes us happy or the thoughts that it evokes? Hearing is how we hear music and listen to other sounds. An Activity or memory may be associated with a particular sound. Mind can also play tricks on us, we can hear or see things that are not even there. How do we know if you or me are normal? We have some understanding of the brain, but there is still much more to explore. If only I had an EEG for a person at rest and another for a person listening to music. The person listening to music would likely have large amount of visible activity on the brain. In this case music can be described as stimuli, whether it be good or bad.

Music is what defines us, who we are, what we feel and what we like. A lot can be told by knowing what type of music a person likes from my point of view. Wherever you go you would hear music, or see people playing or listening to it. Its an everyday lifestyle, and not only do we listen to it for fun but it can attract a lot of attention towards something. It can basically bring life into something such as a performance or even a presentation. It would attract people to listen and look at something since the sound would be interesting to them. With music you can express how you feel about a person or thing. Despite the fact its fun it relaxes me while I’m tensed about something, it lightens my mood and takes me away from all the stress. I would listen to music that has meanings in the lyrics, or a fun beat to dance to, or even sad low music if I feel down. Everyone has their own taste of music whether its jazz, hip-hop, or any type. “Music is what feelings sound like” as said by Ana Macbeth.

The chapter ‘’music ‘’ in John Medina ”Brain Rules’’ was one of my favorite chapter in the whole book. One of the reasons it’s because music inspires me, the lyrics of some of the songs relates to what I’m living now. My type of music helps me relax. While I’m driving music helps me be alert and be less nervous. At the beginning of the chapter the author mentions Henry and how music brings him to life.I think music does that to everyone.I cannot imagine a world without music.

In John Medina’s, “Brain Rules, Music,” Medina discusses how music affects the brain. Music is a widespread genre that many people can relate to. Music is therapy. Whether it is used to get you out of a runt, or to continue on with the festivities, music is the cure for all. Medina talks of a dementia patient who, through music, became “alive” again. Biologically, when we listen to some of our favorite genres of music, our brain releases dopamine, which puts us in a good mood. I believe music has saved us all, one time or another. Music has helped me through the rough times and contributed to the good times. Music, in all, is essential for a heathy mind.

In the chapter MUSIC from John Medina’s ” Brain Rules.” Medina talks how music help us to memorize stuff more than what we do normally. Music is also used as treatment through music therapy. A German poet say’s about music that when the music hit you, you feel no pain and Medina also mentions a story of an old guy who always sits alone and do not talk to anyone but when he listen to music he becomes alive and start dancing like he have nothing to lose. Music can mean different to different people, for example music that a teen age boy likes maybe a 50 years old would not like. There is no proper definition for music but most common in people is that music is set of different vocals and instruments played in a sequence. Studies shows that people who learn music they do batter in studies because their power to hear is stronger than others which helps them to understand faster. Music also helps to develop our brain.

According to John Medina’s chapter “Music”, music has a lot of effect on who we are today. In today’s society, music helps us remember things best. By listening to music, while learning, you tend to remember what you learned best. It also helps us describe how we feel and makes us feel better at time. Music is one of the main reasons why we are united as a society. Music is a tool of communication. It is the only language we all speak and it is the only language we all agree to. For example: when I go to a party, and see everyone dancing, it tells me right away that they are all happy. Every music has a different kind of mood. Some music might be better to listen to when you are happy while others can be for sadness.

I enjoy music, but in Islam some believe it is forbidden. Some believe only drums are allowed, and the rest believe it is okay as long as the lyrics are not saying something or encouraging evil. I am kind of stuck between the first and the last, because I enjoy listening to music, but I also notice how it has a negative or I should say how it had a negative effect on me when I was younger. Now I mainly listen to R&B. It was refreshing to read about Henry. I noticed that same thing on a mini scale when I visited a nursing home with my ex to visit her Grandmother. I could see how the music had a good effect on the residents and even the atmosphere. I noticed the same thing in dance clubs. When a song comes on which depicts violence, you can feel the atmosphere change and more people are prone to get into a fight.
