Class Notes: Wednesday, October 4: College Writing and Literacies Discussion Notes

What We Learned About the Practice of College Writing What We Learned About Literacies and Reading and Writing Practices as Socio-Technical and Cultural Phenomena
Group 1

Paragraphs: focus

Brainstorming useful to help us form ideas and choose the best one

Revision process [ is awesome!!!!!!]  Can help you flesh out your ideas more

Literacy is everywhere

Reading and writing is more important than just reading and writing: It is a way to communicate with the world around us

It may happen that your relationship to literacy changes, but it will remain important

Group 2

Brainstorming helped us formed ideas and helped us in the essay writing process

“Inspiration”/Reading what you wrote  is important: Reading passages outloud and

Friends and family are important to literacy practices; giving someone else something you wrote will help you better understand what you are doing and trying to say

For some people, networked technologies and videos have greatly facilitated the writing and reading process

Group 3

Learned about the process of writing; drafting; organizing; the revision process

For many peopele, ach paragraph should have a topic sentence and

Types of paragraphs:  narrative, descriptive, expository, persuasive

Always have supporting ideas and focus and a point for each paragraph: use evidence!!!!!!

How English has evolved and changed and this is significant because in the 21st century we use a language unique to our time

Technologies have had some negative impacts because it can be distracting; reading a book is different online and in print

Group 4

Understood reading and writing as a two way street: when it comes to reading and writing, you have to be clear to yourself and your audience

Even though the narrative essay was about ourselves, it still required focus and structure

Technologies have had a negative impact for some.

Big words are not always “big words,” i.e., the answer!

Group 5

The importance of audience and how structure and organization relates to audience concerns

Instead of just telling a story from a purely informational perspective, you are telling a story that has to make sense to your reader

Building critical thinking skills is part of writing; this time we thought about our audience and therefore the process was different.  Thinking rhetorically was transformative.

Culture matters: when we were doing the peer review: how we read is determined by how we have learned to read and interpret

GA5: Thinking and Talking About the Revision Process

First, please read about Higher Order Concerns (HOC) and Lower Order Concerns (LOC) in the Revision Process on the Purdue OWL: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/690/01/

Second, please post any questions or observations you have about the three stages–Structural Revision, Line Editing, Proofreading–of the Revision Process, and/or how these relate to HOC and LOC.

Finally, please write one paragraph explaining what you plan to change in the next draft of your personal literacies narrative essay.

What is Due and What We Will Be Doing Wednesday, September 27

I wanted to clarify what is due for our next class session. Here is a list: GA3, RWA3, GA4, RWA4. You will find information about these assignments on our course website: http://www.digitalcomposition.org/rodgerscollegewritingfall2017

PLEASE DON’T FORGET TO PRINT OUT A HARD COPY OF THE FIRST, WORKING DRAFT OF YOUR PERSONAL LITERACIES NARRATIVE ESSAY AND BRING IT TO OUR NEXT CLASS MEETING ON WEDNESDAY.

The draft that you will be bringing into class next week is A FIRST “READER’S” DRAFT, meaning, it is neither just a lot of interesting unstructured ideas written down, nor a finished draft. Rather, this draft is one that you can show to a peer reviewer to receive feedback on and suggestions regarding. As a result, put your best foot forward but also know that the draft you are writing WILL CHANGE in some substantive way based on the suggestions of others and your own thinking about the draft and the topic. In this draft, you will be shaping, expanding, and re-presenting material from your exploratory draft. You can do this by hand or on the computer. However, the draft that you bring in to our next class MUST BE TYPED and DOUBLE SPACED. Your working draft must also must include a TITLE, an INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH, and some BODY PARAGRAPHS; it should also be no less than two pages.

GA4: From Exploratory Draft to Working Draft

GA4: From Exploratory Draft to Working Draft

The purpose of this week’s Group Assignment is, like RWA4, to assist you in assembling a working draft of your personal literacies narrative essay, which you will bring to class on Wednesday, September 27.

Here are the instructions for this group assignment:

1. Please re-read the essay assignment, your GA3 post, and your exploratory draft.
2. Please respond to any questions that Professor Rodgers has asked you and post any questions or comments that you have ON YOUR OWN GA3 post.
3. Review your classmates’ GA3 posts and post a comment to Professor Rodgers’ September 20 post explaining why you agree or disagree with her review of GA3.
4. Post at least ONE QUESTION or OBSERVATION about the drafting process as a comment to the GA4 OpenLab Post.
5. RESPOND to at least one question or comment that is part of the GA4 OpenLab Discussion.

Wednesday, September 20: A Note From Professor Rodgers

First of all, thanks to Sheldon, Adriana, Mohammed E., Nandi, Chadel, Alex, Mohamed T., Stefan, Tyra, Kyle, Melannie, Akram, Collin, Anika, Hui Lin, Demba, and Omayra for completing GA3 and submitting it on time. Thank you also to Chemar for starting the assignment on time and for posting the work in progress. For those who have yet to submit GA3, feel free to do so. However, as you know: it will be late.

You have all done an excellent job of deciding on a topic and focus for your essay. That said, some of you have a more focused topic than others. That is fine. However, those of you who have a less focused topic may find that you end up having to spend more time this next week figuring out how your essay will be structured and what exact “story” you will be relating. Remember: we all have our own approach to the writing process for college essays. For some of us, brainstorming continues through the drafting process. For others, it does not. However, we all will be learning a lot about the discrete steps involved in the drafting process over the next week.

In my opinion, the seventeen essay topics posted seem to fall into two general categories: 1/ the roles and impacts of technologies on the development of reading and writing practices, and 2/ the roles and impacts of other languages and dialects on the development of reading and writing practices in Standard Written English. Would you agree with this assessment? If so (or if not!), please take a look at your classmates’ posts in GA3 to consider how their topics may relate to your own. I cannot stress to you enough how important it is to talk about what you plan to or are writing about with others, particularly if they have similar concerns. We will also all eagerly await Chemar’s revised GA3 post to see if his topic falls into one of these two categories!

RWA3 is due by the end of the day Wednesday. For those of you who may be working ahead, I have posted GA4 and RWA4. However, I will not make the discussion board for GA4 available until Thursday, Sept. 21.

GA3: Brainstorming

Please read the Personal “Literacies” Narrative Essay Guidelines.  Then, do some brainstorming!  (See the HANDOUTS section of our Course Open Lab site if you want to learn more about approaches to Brainstorming)  Afterward, post a reply to the BRAINSTORMING A PERSONAL NARRATIVE ESSAY blog post in which you write two short paragraphs:  in the first paragraph, you will describe HOW you brainstormed for this assignment; in your second paragraph, you will explain WHAT your topic will be for the narrative essay and WHAT you plan to write about.

Notes

“Meaning making is an individual process.”  You need to apply what you are reading to your own knowledge, experience, and purpose.

It is the job of the writer to make sure that two different readers relate to the text in the same way.

When you write, it is harder to convey to the reader what the author is thinking.  People have different associations with different words.

“Do you see what I am saying?”

Other people will have different associations with what you write.

6.  Having responded to questions 1-5, what new or different insights into the essay do you now have?  Please explain.

Alexie’s essay stood out for us because we felt he was having a conversation with us.  We got into a very interesting conversation regarding Alexie’s use of the term “Indian.”

RWA3: Brainstorming Step 2: Structured Free-Writing an Exploratory Draft of a Personal Narrative Essay

After you have completed GA3, you can get started with RWA3. You will find instructions for this assignment here: Fall 2017 RWA3: Structured Free Writing a Personal Literacies Narrative Essay

To submit RWA3, you have two choices:

1/ Create a blog post on our OpenLab site and attach a picture of your structured free writing there or,

2/ E-mail me a picture of your structured free writing as an attachment: jrodgers@citytech.cuny.edu

I don’t care how whether you do your free-writing by hand with pen and paper, on your phone, on a tablet, or on a laptop or desktop computer. Please just write for anywhere from one half hour to an hour. Afterward, take a picture of what you wrote and post it.

Course Notes: Wednesday, September 6

Would anyone like to post their notes from today’s class?  I know which keywords we discussed, but beyond that, I am having a hard time reconstructing all of the different things we talked about.
