TEST YOUR COMPOSITION

***Comparing the positive and negative image will give you a better sense of your figure-ground composition.

Both positive and negative images should feel like they have equal foreground and background.

3. If your test reveals that you need to alter your images, return to your work and re-crop

          • REMEMBER: These assignments are scaffolded, each one builds on the previous one.
You must have 5 pairs that show figure-ground to move to the next assignment.
          • Don’t forget to bring masking tape to hang your sketches.

criteria

          • Create figure-ground compositions using a letterform
          • Use letterforms of your choice
          • Use writing systems of your choice (examples below)
          • Use only 1 letter for each study, explore different letters in each study
          • Solid form only, not line or outline
          • Choose letterforms with “mass,” to create equal amounts of black and white more black per unit
          • Use a thick black marker on tracing paper, no computer work!
          • Examine both the form and counter-form,
isolate just enough of the letter to hint at its identity

      Homework:
Create as many sketches as needed to create 5 figure/ground compositions.
The compositions must have equal amounts of white and black form.

Once you have a figure/ground composition, create an exact copy with the colors reversed.
See the homework page for an example.

If your reverse composition does not work as figure ground, revise both until you achieve a balanced composition.

      Bring all sketches
      5 pairs that show figure/ground
      tape, marker, tracing paper

The homework was to make 5 sketches using figure ground and then 5 more using the opposite color scheme. I should bring a thick black marker, tracing paper, a thin black marker, a pencil and a pencil sharpener to class

Homework is to make 5 separate figure ground compositions, as many sketches as needed to achieve the balance between black and white. Following this, we make replicas to demonstrate the figure ground. Also bring tape, a black thick marker and tracing paper.
