Artist statement.

Motivation is all that matters when it comes to beginning or embarking upon a journey in pursuit of perfection. My journey started with seeing the imperfection of the world. The topic I choose to take up was mental health and its possible cure because I felt that mental health is a major problem and it needed a lot of work. Motivated by the hopes of the people, both suffering from mental illness and the ones who know people suffering from mental illness, to get cured, I took up the responsibility of research and found that meditation can be the most effective way to deal with mental health. The second problem I had to go through was the delivery of my discovery to my intended audience, how was I supposed to let people know about all the wonderful things I discovered? Well, I thought that throughout history, poetry and songs were the fastest medium of spreading information. I thought of writing a song, but reality struck my dream down (i.e, I can’t sing) so I thought that poetry would be the best medium of delivery. While doing research on poetry I had received a notification alerting me that one of my peers had commented on my project proposal. After reading it, his comments made a deep impact on my decision. He stated that New York is a firm for hip-hop and rap so why not write rap lyrics. This made perfect sense as most of the people dealing with anxiety tend to be in their teens or twenties and this particular age group is heavily influenced by pop culture. My decision radically transformed from producing a calm and serene piece of poetry to producing a rather rough and crude and raw version of the poem and tag it as a rap. I also found out that most of the rappers do not have lyrics that rhyme but their lyrics sound good because their music or their soundtrack is amazing. This was another challenge to me, now I had to figure out a particular type of music pattern and merge it with my lyrics which sounds easy but is not. I needed to produce my own music and to do that I had to learn how to get technical (learn to operate the softwares that allow music production). Then I had to refer other artists’ work to come up with an exceptional piece of lyrics that would catch the attention of my audience and make sense at the same time. I had to integrate instructions on how to meditate through a rap song which sounds absurd, but this is the only sane approach that would deliver this particular information to the public mass. If we take time to look at the influential rappers of the past, individuals such as Tupac and B.I.G. or Eazy-E, they brought their own experience and expressed it in a raw manner through their work, they combined emotion and rhythm which is why their music had so much impact. I plan to do something similar; I may not be able to achieve their level of supremacy, but my intention is clear and dedicated to the benefit of others.

The Final Portfolio (the work you’ve completed for Units 1, 2 and 3)

UNIT 1

In our lives, schooling is so necessary. With a good education, individuals will get good jobs and build a promising future. Our lives can be influenced by schooling. Studying will make someone’s life a success. I went to the village to visit my grandparent’s house when I was in Bangladesh (where I grew up). I’ve been spending time with friends of my family. We then decided to go out and see our friends. That day, I met lots of people. I met a lot of people, and some of them were children. An older girl who was teaching them was there for free. Since there was no ability for such children to pay for tuition. Schools are not open in Bangladesh. There, people would pay for college. Owing to the fact that many children do not get the simple skills we learn from school, education is not free there. These kids were in a normal place, they were not in a school. The day was sunny. There was a fan there. Those kids suffered until they understood the value of schooling. There is no way to go without school. If you want a strong study of life, it will benefit you. Those children knew that if they learned, they could get good work. I’m lucky that a have this opportunity for education.  Nelson Mandela once stated that “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” I strongly agree that education can make us strong. It does not only alter the universe, but it is the most powerful instrument that a human can possess. In today’s world, education is very important and highly valued; it is also essential for progress in life. Training is intended to provide students with the requisite qualities that will prepare them later in life for the world of work. The education system also aims to impart society’s ideals and morality to people. The government should pay serious attention to and economically finance education, but this is often not the case. The phase of gaining knowledge is power. There is no worth without education in this century. So, education is important. we should increase our general knowledge by taking advice and learn from our mistakes. Each child has various levels of understanding, but they are improved and strengthened by education. Education’s value should never be compromised. People all over the world believe that the secret to a stable mind and a good life is knowledge. The value of education is well understood, which is why education is still given priority as a national agenda. The government is specifically attacking the very cause of illiteracy and is working hard to eliminate illiteracy. Different literacy programs are administered by the government, such as an adult literacy scheme, a continuing education program, a weekend and part-time study program, a mid-day lunch program, a free education program, etc. The success rate of these interventions is consistent but progressive. A country that is well educated makes a great nation. In our lives, we should follow the phrase ‘Each One Teaches One.’ We should teach those around us who are not educated, and even informal education is better than no education at all. Let us take the uneducated to the light of learning, and let the glory of our nation shine.

UNIT 2

When I was a kid I wanted to be a pilot. For me, it was kinda interesting at that time. If I become a pilot could fly. The pilot can fly I used to think like that. So, I wanted to fly too. I was so curious about the pilot. Becoming a pilot is a great choice for the future. Pilots can go lots of places while they are working. I used to ask people about it that how can you get there if you want to be a pilot? what should be my major? I wanted to travel to different countries and places. I wanted to know about different people’s culture.  But I feel like I lost my interest in it now. When I started going to school, I started to focus on different things like study. So, I went to the school in Bangladesh(where I grew up). I feel like in my country, our system is not that good. Our government just force students to pass the examinations. There is no free time to think about the student’s hobbies. I lived in Bangladesh I know how much pressure they put on students since they are a kid. I feel like students don’t have enough to think about what they like or not. Students just study to pass the examinations. They are destroying their dreams. I started having pressure on the study. So, I started losing interest in these things. Over time, I released that I feel scared of heights a lot. So, I feel like the pilot is not good for me. I think I’m getting to change a lot. So, I feel like the pilot is not my type anymore. I’m going on different ways in life. I think other things are more interesting now. I still love the sky but afraid of height, also I  feel like I don’t have the patience to sit somewhere for hours. Now I like technology a lot, coding, designing, art. I found peace in those things that are I like now.

RESEARCH TOPIC

The topic is global warming.

Know

Fossil fuels such as oil, coal, and gas are increasing the percentage of carbon dioxide in our environment. Because of carbon dioxide, the weather is changing, it’s getting worst. Because of bad Weather, floating is happening, the temperature is increasing. People are losing their homes, family members, food, etc.  We are cutting trees every single day. Only trees can give us oxygen and we need oxygen to live. So, trees are one of the most important things. Plastics are killing our environment because we can not recycle plastic.

Want

What is the change that can help us to save our environment?

How can we stop using plastic?

Learned

Since 1870, global sea levels have risen by about 8 inches.

There is more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere today than at any point in the last 800,000 years.

According to the U.S. Global Change Research Program, the temperature in the U.S. has increased by 2 degrees in the last 50 years and precipitation has increased by 5%.

Though Americans make up just 4 percent of the world’s population, we produce 25 percent of the carbon dioxide pollution from fossil-fuel burning — by far the largest share of any country.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has both the authority and responsibility to reduce pollution from electric power plants under the Clean Air Act, the nation’s bedrock air pollution law adopted in 1970.

Still Want To Know

What kinds of chemicals can destroy plastic?

When we can not recycle something what do we do with it?

UNIT 3

Global doesn’t need us, we need Global

In unit #2, I wrote an Annointed Bibliography about Global warming “Global doesn’t need us, we need Global.” I picked this topic because this is one of the most important things but no one is talking about it and don’t serious about our future generation. After 50 or 70 years maybe there will be no human, animals, trees alive. We just thinking about ourselves right now. We are using lots of plastic bags, cutting trees, making lots of factories for business, using cars all those are increasing carbon dioxide. Greta Thunberg impressed me a lot. Last year I saw her videos and those videos inspired me. Greta Thunberg skipped her school and then she sat down on the street to protect. We can’t go back but we can change our lifestyle. We can’t be selfish, we have to be make a change in our own self for our future. I feel like lots of things happening in our environment that are harmful but we are not taking care of our environment. Because of global warming, there are lots of other things are happening such as deforestation, greenhouse gas, air pollution, etc. All of those problems related to global warming. All I know is we should get serious and we should start taking little steps for saving our environment. This world is our home. If we destroy this our home then where will we stay in the future? So, that’s why we should do something like stop using plastic, plant more trees, etc. I think our government should be more careful about global warming. The amount of Carbon dioxide in our environment is a lot. Because of pollution, people are getting sick, the weather is changing a lot, etc. In the future, pollution will create more problems and that will affect our health and life. The production of chemicals in the environment that are harmful to the health of humans and animals, or that do damage to the planet or materials, is air pollution. Water is getting dirty too because of factories. They throw lots of plastic things into oceans and then fish and other animals try to eat that plastic because they don’t the difference. And plastic doesn’t get mix with anything. After years and years, researchers found that plastic doesn’t recycle. On the other hand, some of them tried to burn plastic but they saw it makes air pollution a lot and that’s not good for our environment. I think we should stop using plastic bottles and we should use glasses bottles. Then we should stop using plastic bags on market. On the other hand, we can use cotton bags. It could be more helpful for our environment.

The Final Portfolio.

Unit 1 assignment.

“I haven’t come across a norm that states that education should be for success, authority or wealth. When we think of education, the first image we perceive is studying to become a successful person right? Well, we aren’t wrong to hold such conceptions but what if education was something much more than that? What if education had a bigger purpose? Thoughts and questions such as these may not seem logical or even sane, but if we take some time to examine education, unbelievably simple yet great secrets unfurl. Just last year I was attending a seminar, not because I wanted to but because my beautiful neighbor was attending. I wanted to get to know her more. During the seminar my attention was fully directed on that girl. The way she smiled, her eyes, the way she took notes, everything was simply beautiful. She came up to me one day and asked me to take notes for her as she had something important to do that day. This was my chance to impress her by showcasing my notetaking skills. When I started taking notes during the seminar, I realized that it was the first time I was actually paying attention to the subject and that attention was all it took to change my view on education forever. the seminar started with the phrase, “we must learn how to learn” and while contemplating on that phrase, it completely blew my mind. The seminar went on and I continued to take notes. I jotted down all the main ideas in a well-organized and orderly manner. The first point was that education is relative. How to tie your shoelace is also education in relation to someone who does not know how to tie them or learning how to cook is also education for people who do not possess the skill to cook. In that way education is taking place all the time in our daily lives. We are constantly learning how to be a better version of ourselves. The second point stated that we are learning with a goal in mind which tends to make us miss the beauty of learning. If we have a goal in mind, we will experience a kind of placebo effect, we dedicate all our studying to achieve that goal and, in the process, we miss all the fun that learning provides. We stress too much towards achieving our goals which leads us to all sorts of mental health issues. If we just learn for the sake of knowing, not for the sake of personal gain, but for the sake of a basic notion of humanity, we may not have to deal with all the suicide cases. The third statement was what struck me the most. It said that we are all mortal and we must keep that fact in mind all the time. When we forget that we are mortal we tend to overlook all the things that are very small yet very valuable. Say for instance you argue with your best friend. Did it ever occur to you that it may be the last time you are seeing or hearing from this person? If you think this way you will learn to appreciate everything that is going on around you. All people indoctrinating such philosophies into their midstream could lead to a better world because If we were to die tomorrow it is highly unlikely that we will argue or fight with anyone. If we keep mortality in mind, when we seek education our purpose won’t be materialistic. We would want to get educated in order to help people because that is the only valid thing to spend your life on. We are going to die anyways, why not help a bunch of people and feel good? Such an approach to education will trigger a profound transition in your education. You start to learn without prejudice or without preconception, allowing us to completely absorb all the information without negating a single one since we have no preconceptions. I was so focused at that point in the seminar, that I forgot I was taking notes for the purpose of my presence, the girl. When she returned, I gave her the notes and she came to me that evening saying my notes were scary. I stress on death. Why would you stress on mortality? She asked and my answer was an example. I gave her the example of a bottle of soy sauce. If the expiration date of the sauce was a few days from now, you would do your best to put it to use. You would use it to season your curry; you make more noodles because you have to finish your sauce and you don’t want to waste it. Similarly, if we are aware that our lives have expiration dates, we will use it to the fullest sense and will not waste even a moment of the precious time we have available. If we are aware of the limited time we have, our education will not be guided by selfish goals but instead they will be motivated by compassion and a genuine sense of well-being. Education is, in a very genuine sense, the very basis of human existence. We humans have different levels of intellect, based on that we grasp the knowledge we are provided with. Some of us are faster learners than others and some of us are interested in different sorts of learning. Different in the sense of being different form the normal algorithm of education. Whatever category we may fall into, it is really important to discover that we have a limited amount of time and we have to find a way to make an impact on the world with that amount of time. we must seek education in order to educate others on the basic goodness that all of us have present in us and we must educate and seek education in order to find or to realize that basic goodness for the greater good of mankind. Therefore education, is but a tool to help us shape a peaceful and harmonious world.”

this was my first draft of the semester. it was what I would look back to every-time I felt bad about myself. it was where I would go for security. where I would feel that this was me and that I have progressed. I wouldn’t change anything about this assignment, I want this to be a souvenir.

Bad ideas about writing

“As a kid I was fascinated when I got to travel and experience different cultures and play with different animals. I loved how I would bond with nature and I wished my life would be a rather exciting one filled with the unpredictable situations and challenges. I would have loved to help people in remote areas live better lives and to completely abolish slaughtering of animals for any sort of use as I could not tolerate the fact that the animals did not own their own lives, that their lives were cut short to fill someone else’s stomach or to cover someone’s skin. I still look forward to pursuing this dream. Asking questions to people who hold different views and ideas truly helped me build a broader perspective and to really see where everyone is going wrong and where everyone is lacking a basic sense of compassion. There is a fundamental ignorance, an all pervading one. Now that I have lived among people that do not share my ideals, I have grown used to living against my dreams. Although I am vegetarian, I fail to convince others to become one and I also learnt that most of the economy runs on lives that we, the society, have no right over. I was educated and integrated into a system that taught me how to forget or ignore my dreams and to face the so called ‘reality’ which was simply earning a living by stepping on others. I wouldn’t say living in this context, I would say ‘surviving’. We aren’t truly living. I was taught that if I was unable to do so I would be stepped on my others. This part of education, education for survival, has demoralized me and I feel great sympathy towards myself, and all the people that do not see the flaws of the system that is designed to stain our basic sense of compassion. I get scared when I start to normalize the racism that’s going on around me, I get scared when I ignore the fact that there children and grown people starving when we throw away meals or waste money on a new pair of shoes, I get scared when I start thinking that I must be put before anyone else and I get scared because I am becoming immune to this sense of fear. We must be critical towards the system that we follow. The criticism must be motivated by our basic sense of inherent compassion and humanity. We must work to change the world.”

this one made me nostalgic. It made me visit my past, a past that I had overlooked, and it gave me a sense of motivation. it reminded me about what I was and what I am and where I want to be.

Assignment 2

“Topic:

Why is depression and anxiety overruling the society? How can we solve this problem?

Know:

Depression is a fundamental fear that is also a fundamental human instinct that is mostly covered by our daily busy-ness. When we experience unwelcoming and uncomfortable situations these instincts such as fear and anxiety tend to spring up and overrule our mindsets for a prolonged period of time. Such catalytic situations could include the present scenario of the pandemic and also financial and social phenomenon as a whole and in general. We become or we experience a low state of mind when we encounter situation that are the opposite of the situations we predict. Our predictions can be quite misleading. We may predict that our loved ones will survive for another few years or that our businesses will thrive for few more years, but we cannot really ensure that we will wake up to see the sun tomorrow morning. So, the catch here is that depression and anxiety come out of hope for our predictions to be fulfilled and fear of it not progressing as we wish for it to. Now the solution I offer is to appreciate our daily lives. To appreciate each moment as if it was your last. This is a profound Buddhist ideology and way of life. A way to remain content with what we have.

Want:

Why is it that the world is getting very modernized and the technology and standard of life is increasing, but the basic sense of happiness and humanity is fading? Why are there more people taking their own lives? Why are there people taking medication for an illness they do not have? Why are there people experiencing difficult situations with the increase of globalization? Why is it that we are so stuck up with how we appear to feel rather than how we are actually feeling? Why does our social status matter more than our mental ones? How can the society possess such ruthless algorithms and definitions for decency and normality? How can we help our society to be less judgmental about what others are and care more about the well-being of the whole?

Learned:

In an article published by hopefordepression.org, they make strong statements such as the causes of depression being unknown till date. They believe, through research, that depression is more of a genetic cause and it also suggests that stress is not the primary stimulant of depression. The fact that appalled me the most is that there have been no other medications developed since Prozac that was developed in 1985. The statistics show that in 2017 there were 47,173 deaths in America caused by depression and suicide and the deaths per hundred people was 14.5. now one person is too many and we are talking about tens of thousands of people losing their lives every year.

Still want to know:

The most important question that is yet to be answered is “how can this number be decreased and what the most efficient way to do so would be.”

this assignment was a major breakthrough and the only thing that I regret is not giving my all to this piece of work. I had a lot of curiosity in many fields, some too irrelevant so I had to choose depression and it was fun finding out about the causes and cure as I felt that it gave my work purpose. I enjoyed doing this because it expanded my grasp on knowledge.

Unit 3 final.

“It took me a very long time to come up with my final project because first of all it was a song and I do not have a good voice. I couldn’t find anyone who would sing for me, so I had to do it myself. (I literally murdered the track, I spoilt it so bad) I didn’t have a choice rather than to sing it myself, so I took some time finding the confidence to do so. I had a good laugh at my final product and that was the best I could do and I really hope you all look at the content not the tune because it sounds like someone is dying. In my previous research, I had discovered that meditation had the best impact on mental health, and I try to instruct people how to meditate in this song. The lyrics go,:

Song on meditation.

Maybe we could stand up, maybe we could sit

Maybe we could sleep or maybe we could eat

It doesn’t really matter because the world is getting cold

Now were fighting over things like toilet paper

Where did we lose ourselves now, where did we make mistakes?

It’s time to turn the ego down and listen with our hearts

We all have those moments where we feel like giving up

But the world still has more happiness all you have to do is see

Let the voices in your head say shit, because you won’t be listening no more

Well close our eyes and ears and open our hearts

Let’s fix this world by fixing ourselves

Let’s start by sitting straight,

Keep ourselves in the present

Thinking about the past brings

memories that don’t exist anymore

thinking of the future

makes restless

there’s no use thinking harder

let’s just be in the present.

Because meditation is all about being aware of your present rather than thinking about the past which brings memories that are not real at present, we are just re-making a situation in our head, and the future is a construction of thoughts that aren’t real too. all that’s real is the present and we have to see that.

I apologize for my voice, but I hope this helps people to some decree.”

I would have really loved to have more time on this project because I rushed the music and the lyrics. I feel that it could have been a great song if I had more time to work on it. I could have gotten someone to sing for me, someone who didn’t sound like me.

The artist statement and the proposal show so much hope when I look back at it, but I am disappointed by my work. it feels like I’ve let down myself on this one.

The rest of the assignments seem fine to me and I do not see the need to change anything in them.
