The Measurement of Police Integrity:By Carl B. Klockars, Sanja Kutnjak Ivkovich, William E. Harver, and Maria R. Haberfeld, Mayn2000
Heavy research has been done by the National Institute of justice by understanding the idea of police misconduct. The survey that was actually done had included opinions on punishments for misconduct and expected disciplinary actions for these officers. This research had a major impact for researchers, policymakers as well as policepractioners. The idea of police corruption happens to be such a vast topic that there many factors behind it that hinders everything. Many of ideas of corruption comes from a reflection of moral defects that relies within a certain individual, in this case it is the police officers. The first rule is to get a better grasp on how the corruption is established, communicated, and understood within that establishment alone .Most organizations actually prohibits such actions .Another word for this is the mala prohibita , meaning to be off duty and doing other type of business. This however complicates the problem even more.because agencies are supposed to prohibit such actions .But this so called unofficial policy is whats causing all this disruption. This policy is supported heavily yet very discreetly by the supervisors and administrators themselves. They allow the misconduct to continue and let it slide but only under certain circumstances. By circumstances the author states it had to be limited and discreet.
I disagree with this research to a certain extent .The main reason is because this research was conducted on police officers which would make no sense because we are trying to prevent corruption. Now what if some of the opinions about the officers are actually inaccurate. What if they told us false information to throw us off.Now I am not saying they are throwing us off but it needs a little bit of common sense because we need to remember this is a whole organization we are dealing with.It states that organizations ” informally prohibits”. So that happens to be a major turnoff for me.If this is the case why it’s nothing being done about because if misconduct is being avoided then why aren’t the supervisors and administrators being questioned .Some things that would really be helpful for research like this is to get opinions from the general population because they are the ones being affected. We need to realize this corruption is way bigger than we think they are running the system. We should be getting ideas from people on how to deal with officers with misconduct and terrible behavior. One perfect example is the death of George Floyd and how the officer put his knee on the mans neck till the point he could not breathe.
