Legal Barriers to Challenging Excessive Force by Police

This article proves as to why police officers are getting away with all these these cases that have to deal with excessive force. As said there are many legal barriers which makes it so hard to challenge police officers when it comes court. There has been over 500 cases in which reporters had examined none of which seemed to add up.They believe the supreme court had created something called the absolute shield. The absolute shield gives police officers accountability of being accused of using excessive force. This in which would give police officers the upper hand more so an advantage. In 1967 supreme court had passed a legal doctrine that protected all government officials from serious law suits.Reuters ( reporter) had identified the idea of qualified immunity. This actually gives police officers the power to kill and injure civilians with only few consequences or possibly none at all.Now what is qualified immunity ,as the article states “The doctrine provides that a police officer can’t even be put on trial for using excessive force unless the person suing proves that:”the evidence shows or could convince a jury that the officer used excessive force; andthe officers should have known they were violating “clearly established” law, because a prior court case had already deemed similar police actions to be illegal”.

This is absolutely outrageous and really just sad.The supreme court is pretty much giving the police officers the power to kill and and injure civilians without little to no consequences. Not mention anyone who even tries to challenge police officers in court will more likely to lose the case. The only relative way to actually prove this is if there is hard proof evidence that shows an officer using excessive force  and if the officer had shown any signs of excessive force. Now today s world there could hard proof evidence, video, and witnesses yet the trials and cases are still lost. This comes to show not only the police force is corrupt but the government its self .In my opinion that doctrine should of never been passed because its not viable.I am pretty sure that the people would have never supported this decision.  Not only police officers but all government officials should be trialed the same way as if they are part of the general population. The police force should be decentralized in a way where it limits there power because at this point they are just taking advantage of their position .
