I am a seventeen year old, tutoring K-10 students at a tutoring center. It was a cloudy afternoon and I chose to spend it inside a 4 walled room, where it was warm and sticky due to the lack of fans and air conditioning. The air smelled of whiteboard markers and the room was filled with sounds of students whispering to each other. The room was filled with bright light emanating from long tubes of ceiling light fixtures. All the tables and chairs were packed with immature children who faced towards each other and looked at the whiteboard to copy anything they had to. As usual I felt the pressure of teaching so many children belonging to different levels, some in pre-kindergarten some in middle school and a handful in high school, not to forget the ones that did not speak English and needed help in understanding through a different language. When I look to my right I saw the huge whiteboard and from the corner of my eye I noticed the door and felt like runnig out of the tutoring center to someplace calmer. To my left I saw the laptop and printer which was done printing the material I needed for a student. Behind there were some annoying and talkative students. In front of me was my diverse pack of students. So as usual I tried to work things out and try to make all the students understand what they had to do and what strategies they had to use to find the answers to the questions they were faced with. For some reason a couple of students, namely the ones that spoke very little English had diffulties in understanding me and a bunch of other students were talking to each other which bothered me. It was at that moment that I felt like the ceiling was crushing down upon me and the floor was about to swallow me up. Then help came out of nowhere, one of my colleagues gave me advice on how to deal with the situation, he said that I should write out the answers for the students that didn’t know much English and they should just copy it down. The other students I should break down their answers step by step. Some of the students I had to teach them to memorize their multiplication tables. Throughout the six months that I worked in the tutoring center, I saw these students flourish and become better learners. This led me to understand that there is no one size fits all method of teaching students, each students has his own way of learning and the teacher has to flow with that method and strengthen their weaknesses.
