- What are the elements that define architecture?
- Space, light, solid, void, scale, proportion
- Together we’ll look at some examples of small structures that manipulate these elements qualities to create specific spatial qualities
- In Class Activity – Seating
- Take a look at different seating types and their uses
- Measure and sketch a variety of different seating options in our space
- Understand the proportions of typical elements
- How does the seat match (or not match) the human form?
- Try to identify the different ways each seat can be used
- Once complete, lay out a 20′ x 20′ space that utilizes 3 different types of seating:
- Social seating for at least 2 people or a small group
- Private seating meant specifically for 1 person
- Flex seating that can be used by an individual or multiple people at the same time
- Think about what these seats should look like, but also how they might best be arranged in the space
- These should be scaled drawings, but do not have to be hardline drafted, so freehand sketching is ok as long as it’s to scale
- Document the space and seating types however best works for you
- Plans, sections, 3D drawings, whatever works to show off your ideas
