Topic

Building Sections and Stairs

Objectives

  • Understand sections in more detail by using a multi-level home as a case study
  • Learn how to construct stairs using riser and tread ratios

Activities

  • Overview of stair construction
    • Riser and tread group exercise
      • As a group, use the dimensions given (see PDFs below) to design stairs that connect each level.
      • Calculate the correct number of risers and tread, and list the dimensions for each. Remember to include an intermediate landing for any stair over 12′-0″ high.
      • Provide sketches showing the overall size of each stair which can be presented to the class once the exercise is complete.
      • Upload final sketches to Dropbox in your group’s folder here
  • Continue to develop House Section Project
  • In class drawing demo
    • Link to demo here
      • For the stair portion of this demo, note that I did in fact copy the wrong stairs into my plan drawings (which is why I look so confused, haha)! The treads should all be 10″ (which is the legal minimum for residential stairs) and the risers should all be 6″ which is what I showed in the video. When you reduce the treads to 10″ the stair is not quite as long in plan.

To-Do After Class

  • Using three (2) 11×17 sheets:
    • Set up the title block
      • All labels to use architectural lettering
    • Using the dimensions given, generate the building section and north/south elevations.
      • For extra credit, you may draw additional elevations and/or a different section view.
    • All drawings to be drawn at 1/4″ = 1′-0″ scale
  • Submit final plans, section, and elevation drawings
    • Due Saturday, 11/14 by 12:00pm
