Reading Response #2

  • According to this author, what is the purpose of typography?

For me I think the author is comparing the clarity between good and bad typography. Why typography is important and its purpose. Everything about typography is calculated to reveal rather than to hide the beautiful thing which it was meant to contain. Warde continues to state her main idea that “the most important thing about printing is that it conveys thought, ideas, images, from one mind to other minds.” When it comes to printing you must have a strong good typeface to reveal the message that you want your readers to understand.

  • Why is all good typography modernist?

Warde states that all good typography is modernist; for me it meant “What must the wineglass do” rather than “How should it look”. As a designer the things that you do should always have meaning. Even though you want your design to look a certain way, it’s how you choose your type to help convey that message. When transferring ideas, it cannot be transferred to the best of its extent depending on its legibility. However, good, and legible forms that transfer ideas go naturally unnoticed, as if invisible. A good typographer has the ability to prevent the reader from receiving the story trying to be conveyed by the author of the book. If the font itself is only beautiful to look at, the message cannot be conveyed because the story cannot be seen through the type.
