HW #3: Color, Food Photography, and Instagram

William Eggleston, Untitled (dinner), 1970s

Happy Thanksgiving! This week seems an appropriate time to consider color photography and the art of photographing food. Color is very important to creating an appetizing photograph but color photography was not accepted as an art form until the 1970s. William Eggleston is often labelled the “Grandfather” of color photography because of his groundbreaking work in this area. He achieved this status using the labor-intensive dye-transfer process (btw, you will not be tested on processes for the final) to produce luscious colors in photographs of banal subject matter. Read about Eggleston’s color photography and look through his photographs in the link below (the photograph of the red ceiling aka Greenwood, MS is on the short list for the final). In addition, skim through an article about how some are people are using social media to earn money from their food photographs.

Submit a post with either a photo of something you’re eating/cooking over the holiday week and share with your classmates what you think of food photography on social media.

Read about William Eggleston and color photography here.

Read the Wall Street Journal article “Food Instagrammers Turn Their Accounts Into Professions” here.Sadly this article is now behind a pay firewall, therefore, you can listen to the author Sophia Hollander give a synopsis on NPR here.

I love Thanksgiving. I think its a special way to celebrate and be thankful for the people you love and of course the FOOD. I believe color is essential to creating an appealing and appetizing photograph, especially when it comes to food. I think food photography on social media is a great way to expand a potential business. Advertising food that looks appetizing and appealing to the eye is a great way of catching people’s attention.

In the article, A Road Less Traveled: How William Eggleston Transformed Photography in America By Abigail Cain, she states that, “In a world where Instagrams have become the most popular currency of visual exchange, it can be difficult to understand Eggleston’s pictures as provocative or groundbreaking. While there is no question that his images are beautiful and striking, today’s proliferation of smartphone cameras and artful filters mean that almost anyone can capture the color-saturated, in-between moments of daily life that define Eggleston’s oeuvre.” I think this statement is very true because back then people were taking raw pictures with out any filters or edits, they just took the picture using sunlight and some other materials to make the photo look beautiful.

I think people share photos of food on social media because its a way of communicating to others. There is a saying that your food speaks for itself, therefore food is something that everyone can relate to. We all eat and have favorite dishes. It’s one of the few that everyone has in common. Now that we have technology to edit or photoshop our food images, it allows us to build the gap between our dining experiences and shared social lives.

thanksgiving is a great way to bring the family together and celebrate what you are thankful for. but the one thing that good about thanksgiving is the food and the color that it has for certain foods the aroma with the display of colors for some foods makes the plates look a lot more appetizing with the color. but what i also notice social media such as Instagram does contribute to its display. so many filters can make food look better then it really is but its the presentation of the color and the view of how it was taken. people advertise there food on Instagram to show they are contributing to a form of art in which they can be proud of. and if the food looks appetizing it influences people to start making and advertising there own food. social media is a great way to advertise and influence people on social media about the colors and or presentation of what you make.
