Internship: Week 6

Journal Entry # 16: Working With A Freelancer

Wednesday December 10

Today, Francisco and I tackled the reflective drawer and the white life guard chair. For the reflective drawer we had to use leftover white paper to make the reflection white rather than reflect all the junk behind us. We also shot it at an angle so we wouldn’t get the camera. This worked and I wouldn’t have been able to have done it myself or with the poor lights. After the white chair was easy. All Francisco did was make the background really white. This made the white chair appear less white. This doesn’t mean it’ll be easy to cut out of the background, but you can see the edges, they don’t get lost in the background which is good. After the two items, everything after was a breeze. We got many items done that day that we nearly ran out of things to photograph for the day. Then we were given the difficult challenge of photographing a really huge bird cage. We couldn’t bring it from the back to the front because it was just ridiculously heavy and big to try and bring to the front. We brain stormed for a bit before coming up with the plan to transport the studio to the back. We did this and it was worth it. We set up in the back, used leftover paper as our background. It was easier to bring the studio to the back than the cage to the front. It was fun brainstorming and experiencing challenges that can help out in the future.

Journal Entry # 17: Smalls Part 2

Friday December 12

Since Jenny is no longer interning at Propnspoon, I have to photograph smalls. I was given many trophies to photograph. Many of them were very shiny and reflective. The solution to this would be using a black background. I used the one I didn’t use last time. It was all going well until Dyann came in and began to explain that it would be harder to edit. I tried my best to explain to her that contrary to that it would be easier to select the black. It didn’t matter how I explained it she just wanted a white background. I became a little frustrated, but it did make my life a little easier. I didn’t need to switch between black and white every two trophies. I tried my best to make contrast between background and subject. I did this by using a 70-300mm lens. The lens is good at compressing the background and making the subject pop out a little more. This plan worked fine. I shot nearly 70 trophies.
