So far, the first part of Passing is very interesting. It seems like Clare is trying to forget about her roots based on her current lifestyle and her husband’s remarks. Our first in-class discussion on the first chapter left me a little anxious about how this “friendly” visit will turn out between these two friends. Irene and Clare’s friendship has more to it than just the first chapter. Why haven’t they communicated in so long? What is the reason they are now meeting up? Also, I feel that Clare feels threatened by her husband because he has makes all these assumptions about colored people, but deep down inside, she knows the truth. I think he will find out that she is not “passing”.
