Passing

It seems that in the 18th, 19th and early 20th century, some Americans of mixed European and African ancestry tried to find a way through the racial division. Most people who were subjected by the society to be colored tried to “pass” as white. We may ask ourselves of the reasons? Why the concept of segregation was created in the first place? …..

Limited opportunities pushed many to lose their identity in order to find their fair status.. their freedom. One thing comes to my mind – hostile environment. One tries to overpower another.  Due to circumstances many people experience division in themselves, a concept that segregates people more than they already are.

Passing is a novel that gives us a perspective on the universal theme of what identifies a person – the appearance or their inner self. To be a human is to accept one another and treat others as you would want to be treated, with dignity and respect – a simple formula but such a powerful remedy.

The two woman introduced into the novel Clare and Irene, they  share the past but the future rises an issue of their choices. A thin line that they move forward in the truth of their self’s that for some often never looking back.
