I walked down this path, and as I was getting closer to the end of the path I felt like I was being watched. I heard a sudden sound that gave me the shivers. Seven little pink people jumped out at me and they just stared at me. I’ve never seen anything like them, I was just as amazed as they were. One of the little pink girls then ask me “What are you?” “What’s your name?” “Why are you here”. I didn’t even think they could speak. I began to say I’m human, my name is Karina and this is usually one of the fast paths I take home. I then asked “what are you?”. The pink girl then replied “I’m Momma smurfette and these are my smurfettes. While speaking to Momma smurf she noticed a dark cloud was coming and yelled at everyone to go back into the village, even me. I asked why while walking into the village, why did she yell for us to go into the village, she replied “It means the evil witch Luz was coming”. While walking into the village I was so shocked about how colorful it was and how full of life it was. The Smurfettes village houses were not your normal houses, they were made up of different coIored mushrooms. There were so many different Smurfs who had specific jobs. I was so confused and continuously kept asking myself Is this really happening. I asked Momma smurf how did I get here, I always use this path to get home and I never seen this before. She told me she opened up a new pathway so smurfettes can travel without being hunted by the mean witch Luz. After a long day of learning about the smurfettes I became dizzy. I passed out and when I woke up I was home tucked in my bed with a note on my nightstand that said ” Whenever you want to come visit we’re only a pathway away”. All along I thought it was a dream but I then believed the smurfettes had magical powers.

Dear Stuff
When I was a child my possessions were my clothes, sneakers and jewelry. I hated when people were around my belongings because I was a afraid that something would either break or could have been perminatly damaged. As I started to mature into a teenager I realized that these material things could not benefit my future. They were only temporary items that made my heart melt at the time. My possession in life today is to be successful. I’m not really sure if that’s is considered a possesion but controlling my future is essential to me. Becoming successful to me is back-breaking because I’m emotional. I considered it to be back-breaking because I have no idea what I want to be in life. I understand that I am young and have time to figure it out, but I’d rather know now so I can figure out what steps I need to take in order to succeed. A fear of mine is that when I get my degree will I even be able to get a job in the field that I decided to major in. I know a handful of people who have their Bachelors Degree and still cannot find a job in the area which they studied. Seeing that gives me doubts because it makes me wonder what if that was me. As well there are moments when I’m thinking about my future and I get excited. What excites me is that in August I will officially start my first semester in college. I am currently balancing working and attending school which was a struggle for me because I’m not good on time management but it is preparing me for the next two years of my life. And I feel like writing essays are becoming very uncomplicated for me, which is an accomplishment because I know the majority of my homework will be essays.
What would our childhood be like that without recess? The feeling of knowing that we can take a break from our class work to go outside was breathtaking. In the passage “Playtime is Over” by David Elkind he states how schools are terminating recess. Because of this he feels that kids will never experience the “childhood culture”.
Elkind believes that if schools continue to terminate recess kids will never experience “childhood culture”. “This culture includes songs, riddles, and rhymes passed on by one generation of children to another”. When Elkind states his he is expressing how childhood songs and games have been around for centuries and these different songs and games bring kids from all cultures together. I remember my first day of kindergarten. I was so nervous to make friends because I didn’t know anybody. My teacher Ms. Combs made all of us students sit on her alphabet rug and played different ice breaker games. After we did that she asked if any kids knew the songs Mrs. Spider. She then randomly called on me to sing the song. My peers then joined me and I received so much gratitude from the class. This shows how songs and games bring kids together to educate on how to express themselves, become more imaginative and as welll have confidence.
Recess as well can teach kids life lessons. Elkind says “Children learned to settle their own quarrels to make and break their own rules and to respect the rights of others”. When Elkind says this his perception is that our parents can teach us everything lesson in the book, but sometimes there are lessons that kids should learn on their own. A show that I watched on TV called “That’s so Raven” relates to this topic. In the episode I watched Raven’s little brother Corey almost gets caught return a money key chain that he stoled from a toy store when he was peer pressured by his misbehaving friends. During the episode Raven’s parents let it be known that stealing is not a good deed. After feeling so much guilt about what he did Corey ends up almost getting caught returning what he took, but Raven ends up saving the day. This proves that every kid understands life lesson through their own experience, rather than learning and listening to their parents.
Terminating recess from schools can limit to children experiencing the “childhood culture”. Because of this children will never be able to know classic riddles and games. And as well children will not learn in their younger years how to find the proper solutions to life problems until their mid adolescent stage.
Before taking the Grammar Test I was skeptical because I’m am not really familiar with the terms complex sentence, compound sentence and coordinating conjunction. I feel that once I get a better understanding it will be easy for me to identify those type of sentences. As well I feel that the Grammar Test has helped me understanding what I am struggling with as a writer and after I take enough practice test I will be well informed with the tasks on the CAT W to exceed.
Alexie & Me
1. I couldn’t discuss only one person that gives me strength and hope for my future, so the five people in my life that give me that are my grandfather, grandma, mother, brother and boyfriend. They are so encouraging and truthful, even though my grandma isn’t here with me today she was still these things. Since day one my family has been so supportive of every achievement as well as every decision I have ever made. They always tell me to live for myself and be great at whatever I want to be or do in life. They inspire me so much because of what they have been through. My grandfather was born and raised in Puerto Rico until he was sixteen then he moved to New York. His family barely had any money and still he was able to become a successful man with a loving wife and three outstanding children. My mother who was an patient care techian, ended loosing her job, never gave up and still was positive and managed to find another job within a week. My brother who has been in an accident that has changed his life forever, still manages to be positive and continues to push himself to get better. And my boyfriend who is such a intelligent, inspiring, creative guy who always has a positive attitude. Without these people in my life I could not be the person I am today.
Superman & Me
1. A smart Indian would be considered a “dangerous person, widely feared and ridiculed” due to Americas history. For many years many different cultures have been shamed due to the ignorance of others. Social groups higher than others feel as if because a person cannot get the same education as another they lack intelligence or because of where a person is from can determine how far one can succeed in life. Non Indians adopted this opinion from ignorant people who make comments about other cultures and people because they have nothing positive going on for themselves, they have to bring others down. Indian children adopted this self defeating idea to prove that just because we may not look the same or have the same beliefs I am a human just like you, and I can be successful just like you.
2. When Alexie writes “I was trying to save my life” in paragraph seven he means that because he did not have the privelage to have an education because the reservation treated Indians poorly, he used books to educate himself.
3. The inner characteristics a person needs to break free of stereotypes, dead ends and fo forge a path to success is resilience, acceptance, gratitude, consciousness and integrity. I say this because we are all human beings and the important part of life is to learn, strive and improve daily.
4. The metaphor “a paragraph was a fence that held words” simply means a groups of words are connecting with each other to support and thesis. If I was to explain a paragraph to someone I would say a paragraph is a group of sentences that fleshes out a single idea.
The time I fell into a ditch
As a child my parents made me go to every family reunion and I hated it. But this has got to be one of the worst family reunion vacations I’ve ever went on. So I was about nine or ten and my fathers side of the family was having there reunion in South Carolina. My mother, father, cousins, siblings and I drove down there which takes about ten hours. After a long stressful ride we finally get to our hotel. My family reunion is about a week long. Everyday of the week we have different activities for us to do as a group which used to be really fun. As our trip was coming to an end we spend our last day at my great grandparents house. I was amazed on how big my family is. While all of the adults where inside the house the kids played outside around the house. People who live down south knows that when It gets dark outside it is pitch black. Us kids decided to play tag in the backyard. My cousin Celeste was “it”. As she was chasing everyone around the house, not paying attention and because it was pitch black I didn’t see the ditch. Five seconds after I was able to climb out of the mud. It was disgusting, I had mud everywhere, bugs everywhere on me and I ended up lossing a shoe. I remember I began to just cry hard to the point I had a headache. I didn’t want to be around anyone but my mother. One of my cousin ended up going to get her and she was crying drastically as any mother would when their child is hurt. This was one memory I could never forget.
“Girl” collage
As a child my grandparents always told me “strive for the best princess, nobody can ever bring you down”. As well as “positivity is they key to life, always put positive thoughts into the universe”. All my life my mother was a single mother who depended on her parents to help out. “Never expect a man to take care of you, be a successful black woman, never put a man before your family because your family is always there through it all” she would say. As a kid I was the girl who looked up to older brother and admired him for how talented he was even though he was a bully. Till this day he tells me “put god and your family first”. “Make sure you always protect your family no matter what”. In my life god was able to bless me with an amazing bestfriend that has nothing but a positive attitude no matter the situation. Danielle who is my bestfriend is always restating “I know your tired and annoyed with work and school, but make your grandparents and brother proud of you”. “I know that so much had happened in these past two years, but make make a positive outcome out of it”. My aunt Cameo plays a major part in my life as well. As a became a teenager my aunt always preached “learn to be independent, because a situation can appear at anytime in your life and change everything in a matter of seconds, you need to learn how to adapt”. My boyfriend Ju gives me the best advice. He is so supportive and is always pushing me to want more in life. “Baby girl I want nothing but the best for you, I want you to succeed in anything you do”. With having so much positive people in my life, I know that I will succeed In life and I wouldn’t have been able to grow as a person.
About college
Going to college was one of my biggest fears in life. I say this because I personally do not like school, so how is a person who doesn’t like school supposed to graduate college? I hope my first semester of college is positive. Meaning having strong relationships with my professors, breaking out of my comfort zone and keeping my grades up. One thing I worry about is failing. Being so stressed out with not having this balance between work and school. Some obstacles that I will face is time management, organization as well studying. I am always late to everything and late with everything. I need to fix that because when assignments are due I need to make sure that they are handed in on time. Studying is another obstacle that I have to face. I can study for about ten minutes and be over it. I need to pick up some studying habits which will not bore me to death. I hope that college will open many doors for me and give me outstanding opportunities. My goal is to pass all of my classes no matter what term or class I am in and to never give up if something is either stressing me out or making me upset. As well to get these degrees and make a weathlty income for myself.

Starrett City is where it all began, I was raised here and still currently reside here. I couldn’t ask for a better place to grow up and will always love this neighborhood. Starrett is a very quiet and diverse community located in Brooklyn. The people in my community are very interactive with one another because a lot of people went to the same schools in the area. My community is split into sections which is kind of weird. We have the A,B,C,D,E,F,G and H section. When I walk around my neighbor hood there are big trees everywhere, and parks in almost every section. When I go outside I sometimes see people I know, cars driving by playing loud music, buses pulling up to bus stops and people rushing to get on the bus and people always sititing outside behind buildings with their families or friends. We have the basic stores in my neighbor hood like Dunkin Donuts, 99% off which is like a bodega, CVS, Associated Super Market , Boston Market and Golden Krust, but no pizza store can compare to Armando’s Pizza. They have the best pizza in Brookyln to me. I love their cookies, garlic knots and regular slices.
