A community that I have been a part of is the fashion discourse community. I say this because I’m majoring in fashion buisness and technology and since high school (4 years) I studied fashion design. Since I was little I have had a passion for fashion, I rememeber cutting fabric or even towels to make “dresses” for my barbies, I put quotations around “dresses” because I didn’t really sew or made a pattern I just glued the ends of it and put it around the barbie haha. When starting high school I thought I knew everything about fashion but at the end I did not know anything at all but at the start of 9th grade my teacher showed me my first basic sewing terms. The start of fashion comes with first learning the basic sewing by hand and machine terms, for example, backstiching, basting, bobbin, needle, thread, handwheel. After learning the terms of fashion design you start the creative process, you first start by making a pattern which is a flat templetate made of paper card which are determined by the measurements of a person, then you consider the fabric weight, drape, stretch, color. Make sure the fabric is lined up with the patterns correctly , cut out the fabric with those same pattern papers, after that sew the front and the back toguether and overlook which is to reinforce the stich, make sure the design fits the model, adjust it based on that model and honestly basically that’s it. I feel like I am not a professional in fashion design terms but I know the basics, for sure I know a lot more than I did 5 years ago, I do feel like Perri Klass who says she felt she learned a new language, I feel like I did too.

This is great! Sewing has always been very mysterious to me, I suspect because I’m very bad at it, and it definitely has a language all its own.
