The text was kind of complicated to the point I had to read some of the paragraphs over and over. The main thing that confused me and I had the most questions about was fuku. There was many different “definitions” and explanations of fuku, especially when we researched it in class. We know that fuku is some sort of curse, but in the text it says “everybody knew someone who’d been eaten by a fuku…” This confused me because if fuku is a “curse” how can someone be eaten by one and how could it been seen. Another part that confused me was the part in the text that said “It was believed, even in educated circles, that anyone who plotted against Trujillo would incur a fuku most powerful, down to the seventh generation and beyond.” After reading more into the text fuku came upon the people after it was taken over other settlers. Questions I still have is how was anyone eaten by fuku and was “fuku” seen?
