We will discuss and write about the takeover of City College in 1969 by students, including the Five Demands left in the office of the City College president Buell Gallagher. Please click here to read about the protests at City College at the time, a timeline of events, that led to the campus takeover and, eventually, to open admissions at CUNY, and the Five Demands themselves. The CUNY Digital History Archive is very interesting and also has information about the City College student takeover and the changes that this action led to. I will have writing activities for us to work on related to these materials, but for now just read these online resources and be prepared to discuss what you think about these events. Click on the links above to be ready to talk (and write) about the five demands next Monday (December 4) in class.
