Cecilia Taveras – Homework#2 Walker Evans’ Subway Portraits

Most of the greatest artist and photographers are known for their most great talented work and Walker Evans is one of them. Walker Evan was most known for his snapshots of subway passengers during the great depression era in New York City subways stations. As I look at Walker Evans photographs, it seems that he tries to portray the sense of how everyday life, surviving the time of the depression era in New york City in the subway. For example, the face expression on the passengers gives you a sense of emotions as a story, it gives you ideas and hints behind the passengers expressions. it also gives a sense that it was documentary work for Walker Evans because I believe it was straight forward characteristics with the passengers and it was more showing the urban side of New York City. As of now in New York City passengers compare to Walker Evans work of photographs I believe it will be the same expression but it will be a different concept or title. I believe that New yorkers face expression will somewhat be the same way but it will be for a different reason instead of the depression era, it will be a different issue as today that all subways passengers are facing right now instead of the great depression era. They will also be differences compare of today subways shoots of passengers to Walker Evan shoot of passengers during the great depression era. The difference will be the wardrobe of subway passengers, the connection or interactions of subway passengers might be slightly different than what they were during Walker Evans time and the subway lines/stations.

I agree with what you write about Walker Evans. He really captures the facial expressions of the Great Depression Era. People on the subways looked like they were in their own world. We see the same today. People read newspapers,”stare into space”, or just plain people watch. The way people dressed back then compared to now is very different. People would ride the subway dressed in suits and dresses. Many people dressed formal on the subways now are usually on their way to work. Back then people dressed formally all the time. I also love the way he photographed the woman in their hats and their facial expressions are so real and alive.
