SELFIE

The controversy over whether or not selfies are art depends on one’s perspective. From my perspective, selfies are art. Since it incorporates similar elements when taking any regular photo. The definition of photography is “the art or practice of taking and processing photographs” and selfies are just a different form of taking picture to display art. There are claims of selfies being too accessible since nowadays everyone owns a smart phone, just because it’s more accessible doesn’t make it less of an art. The angle that selfies are taken, reveals tremendous about the person. For example, an honest person is more likely to take a whole face shot while a shy person would most likely take it from one side of the face. The point is, the way selfies are taken reveals a lot about the individual—they are expressing themselves. Just like artists and writers express themselves intentionally and subconsciously leaving a fragment of their personality in their work or art. When photographers take our pictures, most don’t feel comfortable. Being our own artist or photographer allows us to show the world who we are from our view—comfortable in our skin. The camera is a paintbrush and our body is our canvas—we have the right to paint it however we wish to express ourselves.
