Current Assignments & Posting

I have created each of the following categories for you to post your assignments.  All assignments are to be formatted for 11 x 17 horizontal presentation.  Keep them compiled for yourself in a single PDF in chronological order.  If you redo your family board your PDF is to include both copies.

  • 1.01 My Family:  (your family boards)
  • 1.02 My Client Q & A (compile the q & a onto a board)
  • 1.03 My Program (list of your program spaces – on a board)
  • 1.04 My Matrix (matrix of program space relationships)
  • 1.05 My Bubble Diagram (diagram of your program spaces)

All of these assignments must be posted by Tuesday (1/4) evening at 11 pm.

Inventory & Analysis Categories

Please Join Three (3) Groups:

Below is the list of categories based on our recent site visit.  If you have a suggestion about additional categories please make them.  I will ask each of you to join at least three (3) of the groups.  If you join a group it means you will be responsible for helping to complete the inventory and analysis boards for the category.

Additionally everyone should contribute to every category – adding and making comments as the class completes the inventory and analysis. There will be two drawings for each category – one that is the inventory board and a second that is the analysis.

Process:  Often it is helpful to compile the inventory analysis as a table in excel with a listing of inventory items in rows and a column to check off if it is an asset/liability/neutral and a column for possible design responses.  Then this information will need to be transferred graphically to a site plan drawing. It is possible that some of the categories will be combined onto the same sheet.  For example it is possible to combine Topography with Views as views are often dependent upon Topography.

Format: Remember we will be working on a 22 x 34 format that can be printed half size as 11 x 17.  We will review the layouts provided by our volunteer during our next class meeting.

Remember the distinction:

Inventory :  A list of your observations without making a judgement as to the value.

Analysis:  Based on the project goals & program (residential prototype and small tower) review each item on the inventory and decide if it is a Asset or a Liability or if it is Neutral.  Remember that some items (ie: the BQE) could be both an Asset (circulation) and a Liability (noise/air pollution).

  • Circulation
  • Climate
  • History
  • Land Use
  • Noise & Air Pollution
  • Open Space
  • Photographs
  • Site Aspect
  • Site Furnishings & Materials
  • Topography
  • Vegetation
  • View To/From
  • Zoning Analysis

Design Response:  When you begin to design you should be able to show how some of your intentions are a direct response to the inventory/analysis process.  For example part of your design may take advantage of an “Asset” (good views) and another port may look to minimize the impact of a “Liability” (noise)
