Description:
Students work in teams to measure the classroom and translate the information into a scale plan and interior elevation following basic graphic standards.
Objectives:
- Translate on-site measurements of a building into scaled drawings that relate the plan, section, and elevation of a building following basic graphic standards.
- Develop a vocabulary specific to architecture and construction.
- Work together as a team, learning to divide responsibilities and manage time.
Tools Needed:
Measuring tape, sketchbook
Drafting tools: pencils, erasers, drafting table with a mayline, triangle, trace or vellum (or other sheer white paper), architectural scale, drafting dots
Process:
Lab 3a: In-class
Teams to be chosen in class.
Team 1 – Team 5
- The class collectively tapes the perimeter of the classroom at plan cut height 4’-6”.
- Students work in teams to sketch each side of the classroom plan. Then, the group compiles the information into a single plan. Keep in mind the door, window, and column locations.
- Using tape measures, measure and record actual dimensions of all plan elements.
- Upload the scanned plan sketch with dimension recordings to Miro.
Lab 3b: In-class
Drawing to Scale: Plan
- Students continue to work together in the same team to share notes.
- Use the scale to reduce the actual dimensions in proportion (to scale) to draw a plan that fits onto the sketchbook.
- Draw the plan. On 1 sheet of sketch paper, center the plan and draw at 1/8” = 1’-0” scale
- Draw the plan of the WEST wall only at 1/2” = 1’-0” scale – on the top portion of the piece of trace paper center the plan and draw. We will assume our wall thickness to be 1’ to the outside the window.
- Apply lessons learned from Lab #1 about line weights and details.
- Apply lessons from the lecture about typical drawing conventions to differentiate specific architectural elements such as windows and doors.
- Upload the completed plans to Miro.
Lab 3c: in-class
Extending Construction Lines: Elevation
- Begin with a sketch of the interior elevation of the WEST wall, keeping the door, window, and column locations in mind.
- Using tape measures, record actual vertical dimensions of all elevation elements. Note that horizontal dimensions are already defined in the plan.
- Use the ½” plan of the WEST as a base and extend construction lines o create the corresponding elevation view.
- Use the scale to reduce the actual dimensions proportionately (to scale) to draw an interior elevation that aligns with the plan.
- Upload the elevation sketches with dimensions and completed elevations to Miro.
